On Día de los Reyes (Jan 6th), I published a post about the beautiful plans that were in place to celebrate the holiday.

Well, that did not happen. Life had other plans.

My son was not feeling well when he came home from school and practice. The culprit? Expired yogurt! An accidental misreading of the “best by” date and an oversight on my part in clearing out the expired food led to great discomfort for him.

Rosca de Reyes was not tried until the following day: my husband found the baby, or rather the scary, bright white, plastic toddler, in his slice of cake. My son had opened his gifts Tuesday morning but my husband’s and my gifts were waiting patiently by the fireplace until several moments ago. We planned on resuming the festivities this past weekend but life threw in additional surprises that prompted further delay in playing the much anticipated "unwrapping" game.

Sometimes the best laid plans don’t unfold like we would like. And sometimes life requires a decision as to how we will respond. We can choose to become upset and frustrated. We can choose to remain in that space and wrapped in energy that may not be entirely helpful. Or, we can choose to PIVOT. Although plans may not always unfold as we envision them, we still have the opportunity to create the memories. Yes, things may look slightly different, or entirely so. However, the underlying sentiment can remain the same. The choice is ours to make - pivot or not.

Self-care is not a luxury, but a priority.

“Create” is the inspiration for my year.

Today is Día de los Reyes and a gentle ending to our holiday season. This morning, small gifts were waiting in and by the shoes that were purposefully set out last night. A statue of the Magi stood overlooking them and the simple display of the manager. Decorations will start coming down, ornaments boxed, and ribbons stashed. A reset will happen, gradually, as time, energy, and sentiment allow. But tonight, we will enjoy Rosca de Reyes (cake) and congratulate the one who finds the baby in their slice of cake. We will put together an Oreo cookie train (this year's version of a gingerbread house) if time permits because it is a school night. We will safeguard our time to play the unwrapping game, a longstanding Día de los Reyes tradition in our home. There is always laughter and intensity as we race to unwrap the prizes hidden beneath the layers of wrapping paper. Tonight is about togetherness. It is a celebration of faith, family, and culture. It is a slowing down and, in some ways, a gearing up. The reset will happen; but tonight, it's all about being present.

Christmas is around the corner!!! Like me, you may still be trying to take care of a few gifts. Here's a solution you did not know you needed --- I feel like "Off the Couch" would be a great stocking stuffer or an excellent addition to a book bundle or a great pairing with a bottle of wine for yourself or a friend!

As of today, Amazon will be able to deliver before Christmas. Just saying....

When our son was one, the Magic Christmas Bag (MCB) made its appearance. Starting Dec. 1st, leading up to Christmas, the bag would mysteriously have a new book waiting for him. As he grew older, it became harder to find a book he hadn't already read in his favorite series. Last year, the MCB pivoted and contained snacks from around the world. This year, it pivoted again. This time the focus was/is on self-care. Probably not too surprising given what I do for a living. I love a broad definition of self-care. The MCB has contained simple surprises with messages ranging from finding joy not just in the big things but also the small ones, tending to needs, taking pauses, and positive/gentle self-talk. We know it is important that we take care of the things we own; sometimes we forget that means us too.

I love seeing the small and creative ways people take to support themselves. A friend shared pieces of jewelry, each holding a different message for her—reminders to stand firm against anxiety and hold on to her sense of self. I love it when we can turn everyday items into meaningful anchors.

The challenge for the week is to be unapologetically present!

"You have the opportunity to show grace to self, to others, to both, if that is what is called for. In addition, we have the option to allow situations to hinder our opportunities for growth. The great thing about life is that we have the right to make what others will call 'bad' decisions. We can be unapologetically present, have our voices heard, learn through very public means, and take up space. We have the right to be an active participant in life. And yes, you even have the option to live your life in a box, where you might feel 'safer' but potentially at the cost of living a life where much of it is happening without you. It is okay for your vision to be your own; it is okay if that vision does not generate lots of support. That does not make your vision any less important or valid."

This is such a great example of the impact something seemingly ordinary can have when it is transformed to something meaningful.

Work was done here. The blanket was shuffled; the pillow studied, held, and tossed aside. There was reflection, contemplation, and expression. Frustrations voiced; fears expressed; laughter shared. This is therapy.
