Today's Sunday encouragement comes from C.S. Lewis: "We cannot go back and change the beginning, but we can start where we are and change the ending."

Many of us have things we would like to go back and change. We think, "If I could fix this (one small thing), then my whole life would be different." While we can't go back, there is a point we can focus on. If fixing one small thing is to make a big difference, why not start with one small thing today? As Lewis said, small efforts from where we are change the ending.

As hospice providers, we understand the importance of good conversations. We aren't just here to treat the physical body but also the mind and spirit. Listening carefully to our patients and their families allows us to provide the best care.

Is there a way you could listen more intentionally today? Doing so could make your speech more valuable and beautiful to the listener.

This Sunday's thought comes from Mary Kendrick Moore's "Be Gentle with Yourself While Grieving."

Many who are grieving may have certain reservations about moving through grief at a certain pace or in a certain way. Maybe you have thought, "This time next year, I'll feel back to normal again." This Sunday, we would like to remind you that this grief is yours, and you will experience what you need to in your own time. Finding ways to gently support yourself during this process is an important part of healing.

We can practice gentleness by giving our body what it needs: rest and realistic expectations. Look for the small things that bring you joy, like soothing baths, reading a novel, or enjoying flowers in a garden. When these things feel hard to do, think of Moore's grief serenity prayer: "God, grant me the serenity to keep moving when I can, the grace to sit down and rest when I can't, and the wisdom to know the difference."
