Please join us in welcoming Emily Edmonson as the Accounting Manager on the Phoenix team! Emily officially joined Phoenix on October 23, 2025.

Here’s an introduction in her own words:

“Hello! I’m Emily, and I’m so excited to join the Phoenix team! Professionally, I have a background in public accounting, with a specialization in government contract accounting. I hold a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Athens State University and am currently working toward earning my CPA licensure, which I hope to complete in the coming months.

On a personal note, I’m the proud mom of five wonderful daughters. Most of my free time is spent with them, so I don't have many hobbies of my own! We love taking trips to the beach, watching the latest movies and shows, or simply enjoying time together doing absolutely nothing!

I’m truly excited about this new opportunity with Phoenix and look forward to what’s ahead!”

Please join us in giving Emily a warm Phoenix welcome!

Please join us in welcoming Cynthia “Cindi” Tapscott, Employment Specialist/Job Coach for Milestones TN Valley, to the Phoenix team!

Cindi officially joined Phoenix on October 20, 2025, and we’re excited to have her on board.

Here’s an introduction in her own words:

“Hi, Phoenix Rehabilitation – it is great to be a part of your organization and family! My primary professional experience has been working as a special education teacher in the classroom and as a director of education in a therapeutic facility. For many years, I also taught part-time in the court referral education program for those arrested on alcohol and/or drug charges. Most of my professional time was spent in the central Alabama region, specifically in Shelby County and the Trussville area, although I’ve also taught special education in Decatur, AL.

I am originally from North Alabama and was born in Hartselle, AL, which is where I moved back to in 2019. Most recently, I utilized my HR skills with an aerospace machining company in Decatur, AL, which unfortunately closed earlier this year.

I am an avid reader, love to bake, love to eat what I’ve baked (too often), spend time with family and friends, go to my great nieces’ sports games (it’s hilarious to watch 4- and 5-year old’s play any organized sport – I highly recommend it), watching college football (Roll Tide Roll!), church. I’m semi-ashamed to say, take naps. Naps are amazing, though.

I am very excited about working with Phoenix, contributing to the genuinely wonderful work done here, and meeting as many of you as possible.”

We’re thrilled to have Cindi join Phoenix and look forward to the positive impact she’ll make in her new role.

Welcome to Phoenix, Cindi!

Our Story

Phoenix is a nonprofit with a mission dedicated to assist people, primarily those with disabilities, to improve the quality of their lives. The vision is to support a community free of employment and social barriers for people with disabilities.

Phoenix’s origination dates to the early 1950’s, coinciding with the polio epidemic that struck the United States around that time. In 1953, several groups in Huntsville and Madison County, including the Huntsville Junior League and the Shriners, began providing rehabilitation services to children under the name of Alabama Society of Crippled Children, which later became well-known as the Alabama Easter Seals.

In the early 1970’s, Phoenix Vocational Services was created in order to provide specialized vocational rehabilitation and help adults with disabilities become better prepared for employment opportunities. In order to assist these individuals in work-readiness preparation, Phoenix sought contracts with local businesses to provide real job opportunities for those individuals in a training status.

In the 1980’s two centers operated by the company, Abilities Development Center and the Huntsville Rehabilitation Center, combined to form Phoenix Manufacturing. Then later incorporated vocational services and government services all under one name, Phoenix. The organization also decided during the 1980’s to stop providing medical services to children under the auspices of the Alabama Easter Seals, since those services were then readily available through various other local agencies.
