Mt Airy Herbs

Mt Airy Herbs I'm an herbalist with 35 years of experience who helps budding herbalists dig deeper into the healing power of plants.

At my herb farm, I offer hands-on classes, workshops and mentorship that empower families to grow and use medicinal plants. Our purpose is to educate and prepare you to create herbal and other natural remedies to care for your family and friends. We believe that knowing how to gather, prepare, and process herbs are empowering. We all depend too much on the local drug store and it's time to be responsible for our bodies and our health. We hope you learn a lot in these pages and that you will return often.

Growing your own medicine isn’t about doing more.
It’s about knowing more your plants, your body, your timing.

This is where herbal medicine becomes personal.

Hibiscus is a beautiful example of what daily herbal nourishment looks like.

In traditional herbal & holistic care, herbs aren’t reserved for emergencies. They’re woven into everyday life , supporting balance, resilience, and rhythm over time. Hibiscus is often enjoyed regularly, not reactively, as part of that steady relationship with plants.

This philosophy is at the heart of how we work with herbs at Mt Airy Herbs.

Tart, cooling, and rich in antioxidants, hibiscus works best when you understand how and when to use it.

In traditional herbal practice, hibiscus is most often prepared as a long, cool or warm infusion, not a quick steep.

This slower method allows the plant’s constituents to fully release into the water, creating a deeply nourishing, mineral-rich tea that’s meant to be enjoyed regularly — not just occasionally.

How you prepare a plant matters as much as the plant itself.

My Herbal Journey

Twenty-six years ago when my babies were small, I felt myself caught up in the same whirlwind as many other young mothers such as myself - the miracle of antibiotics! We would bring our fussy, feverish kids to the pediatrition, get a prescription for this liquid marvel and in two or three days they were running around like nothing ever happened. Pediatritions were always happy to oblige our demands for this miracle drug and in return we turned over our God-given instincts about how to care for our children to his capable hands. We were willing to give our child anything and everything they were prescribed.

Then I met AgathaThrash, MD. I went to her lectures. She was saying something real different. She was a pioneer in her field of using natural as well as conventional medicines and author of several books on using herbs and natural remedies . I followed her everywhere, wherever she was lecturing, and sat absorbing it all. In addition, I read every other plant and herb book I could find. I followed old-timers and botanists around the meadows and woods to learn what they knew about identifying plants as well as the benefits of plants. I was hooked!

I sought the pediatritions for a diagnosis, then often threw away the prescriptions when I got home. My husband, a registered nurse, was quite puzzled by this. “Why go to the doctor if you’re not going to do what he says?”, he would ask me. Going contrary to my kids’ doctors was very scary. But I believed, and still do, in their diagnoses and how important it is to go to them for that. Then you know what you are dealing with and can lay out a plan for which direction to go. I’ve learned the value of listening to my intuition and using herbs, natural remedies, healthy diet, and medical care as a part of the healing process. They all work together and each can be a great blessing.

My husband was supportive, but skeptical. His medical training contradicted some of my new ways of doing things. But one day he came home from work with a bad cold. I was excited! He willingly ingested all the teas, tinctures, and juices I brought him over the next day. On day two he kissed me goodbye as he went back to work, “Hon, you cured me”, were his words I’ve never forgotten. After that he was open minded and ready to try it all. In time he was sharing with others and asking me if I had my teas whenever I started to get sick.
