Thanks to everyone who came out to this quarter's WellRead book club featuring Britney Spears' memoir, The Woman in Me. 📚🫶 📚 (Thanks to Mo Thornton for moderating, and The Episcopal Church of the Nativity for hosting!)
💚 We all watched her unravel in the tabloids, and later on social media. During our discussion, most of us admitted our opinions of her softened after hearing "her side" of the story. It was her story to tell, after all. 💙
A few takeaways:
📚When she was a child, her family treated her like an adult (giving her alcohol, for instance); when she was an adult, they treated her like a child (stripping her of her power through conservatorship).
📚Post-partum depression is another "real" condition that still carries its own stigma in the mental health space. Stats show up to 1 in 7 new moms experience this disorder.
📚While conservatorship is often used to help our loved ones in times of crisis, Britney's father, in particular, used it as a weapon, locking his grown daughter under his control for 13 years.
📚Mental illness and addiction are complicated issues, with genetic and environmental factors contributing to both. Britney had a family history of mental illness and alcoholism, and a highly dysfunctional upbringing. While we can't say for sure what led to her downward spiral, the odds, it seems, were stacked against her.
