“I wish I could do yoga, but I’m not flexible”
This is the most common phrase I hear when I tell people I do yoga. Believe me, I know what it’s like to be stiff and not flexible. And after going almost 2 years without doing yoga, I am definitely feeling that again!
Sure, my hamstrings are tight, my quads are tight, my range of motion isn’t great yet, and a year ago I couldn’t even reach my arm over my head due to my torn rotator cuff. But all these things are the REASON I do yoga. I do yoga so that I can become more flexible and more loose and be more present with my body. And to find peace with where I’m at.
Some people are not able to walk, some people cannot climb stairs, some people are incapable of getting out of bed on their own. My body is able to do those things still, so I’m going to keep pushing. Keep pushing as long as I can.
And it’s not about big movements, big postures, or extreme flexibility. Today my class was Yoga warm-ups and sun salutations. That’s it. I did that for 40 minutes, and even though the movements were simple and small… I had gratitude still being able to do them. I noticed my tension slowly leaving as the class progressed. I was stiff in the beginning, but I started to loosen up as I went along.
I encourage you to do the same. If our bodies are able to move, then we should move them!! Have a gratitude for that movement; have a gratitude for your abilities; and if you keep at it… you will get better. All you have to do is show up and try. You’ve got this!
