How Does It Work?
Acupuncture has such a high success rate due to the fact that it treats the cause of the condition. Since acupuncture allows the body to store itself to a balanced state naturally, this allows for many positive side benefits as the root of the problem is being addressed and not just masking the symptoms.
With such tremendous results patients and medical research institutions alike are finding themselves questioning this ancient practice. While most studies agree upon the healing benefits, there is no conclusive agreement as to the “how” the needles work. One of the western theories state that the insertion of the needles causes the central nervous system to release endorphins, a natural occurring chemical that fights pain and promotes healing.
Practitioners of Chinese medicine have discovered there are 12 pathways of energy, known as meridians, which run along the human body. Each meridian has a number of pressure points supporting different areas of the body. When stimulated, these points have been found to have healing benefits. There are thousands of pressure points on the body, with over two hundred points in the ears alone!
The use of needles is just a part of Chinese medicine. Practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine also use moxabustion, cupping therapies, and electrical stimulation to promote healing.
Moxabustion / Maxabustion
A procedure called moxabustion (or maxabustion) is often used in conjunction with needle treatments. During moxabustion an herbal stick is used to heat the needles. This provides additional stimulation to the pressure points allowing the patient to heal more quickly. Most patients find this procedure very soothing.
Cupping
Suction cups are often used for a procedure called, cupping, to promote better circulation to a particular area. When these round cups are placed on the skin, it will help bring new blood flow to the area in addition to freeing the meridian of any blocked energy. Sometimes patients will experience slight redness or bruising from this procedure. This is normal and will clear up within 3 to 5 days. Primarily used for pain conditions, patients usually see significant improvement with this procedure.
Electrical Stimulation
Electrical stimulation units are often hooked up to needles of key pressure points for additional stimulation. The electrical stimulation units are much like the ones used by physical therapists. Exciting the pressure points promotes healing and encourages the production of endorphins, a natural chemical which fights pain and promotes better health.
