Today we celebrate International Day of the Midwife, a day set aside to recognize the essential role that midwives play in maternal and newborn health! Beyond welcoming babies into the world, midwives provide crucial care during pregnancy, labor, postpartum recovery, and more. 🩵

Despite holding advanced education and training in pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum, midwives remain highly regulated in many areas - including Alabama. Midwives are especially important in rural areas where hospitals with labor and delivery may be inaccessible. Today, we celebrate the often unseen and underappreciated efforts of local midwives to reduce mortality and provide essential health services.

May is Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month, bringing awareness to the reality that roughly 1 in 5 mothers experience maternal mental health conditions. The prevalence of these conditions have increased by 65% between 2016 and 2023, making maternal mental health conditions the most common complication of childbirth and pregnancy.

If you have or are experiencing a maternal mental health condition you aren't alone in your struggle, and it's not your fault. This is a systemic failure to support new mothers and not a personal failure. What you're experiencing is common, it's explainable, and treatable. You deserve to feel well and you will with help. 🩵
