There are some children who grow up carrying far more than the world ever sees.

Samantha, Reagan’s big sister graduated college this week, and we could not be more proud of her. She is intelligent, grounded, compassionate, and strong. In many ways, she has helped parent her sister for years.

This week while the world saw another student walking across the stage, earning a degree, I saw years of quiet sacrifice, patience, resilience, and love that no diploma could ever fully measure.

I wish more people understood that disability does not impact only one person, it shapes an entire family system.

The world she is stepping into feels heavy and scary especially for people her age, and as her mom I worry about all the things mothers worry about. But more than anything I am proud of her and of the balance she carries, strength and empathy, boundaries and kindness, resilience and grace. For her sister she is a grounding presence and a safe place.
She is a beautiful combination of both her parents, shaped by a great love for her sister but she is ultimately and wonderfully herself. And she is loved fiercely by her mama.

Have you ever needed care (daycare, afterschool care, summer care, or adult care) for your autistic loved one? If so, we need your VOICE.

RAN’s Care Survey closes on May 1. There are still 12 counties in Alabama we haven’t yet heard from.

In North Alabama, we need responses from Etowah and Lawrence Counties. Elsewhere in the state, we need responses from the following counties: Wilcox, Sumter, Pickens, Monroe, Lawrence, Lamar, Henry, Fayette, Etowah, Choctaw, Butler, and Barbour.

Please share as this data will be used to ignite care needs across the state of Alabama.

SJ (Reagan’s big sis), bought tickets for a “mom and me” night for closing night of Hadestown: Teen Edition at Huntsville High. She knew I would love it and I did.

I love that she still loves having time with her mom at 21. I hold a lot of guilt around her childhood. I struggle with the time she missed with me growing up (I feel the majority of my time was monopolized by her sister. I know it was hard for her). I need to take my own advice and focus on enjoying the present.

(Bonus: getting to watch her boyfriend on stage playing cello for the entire show!)
