SNPs are a bit more precise than STRs in determining genetic admixture percentages, although STRs are typically better at indicating the world populations found within a person's genome. The robustness of analyzing with each data type depends heavily on the Four Pillars of DNA Testing for Ancestry,....

I wanted to take a moment to let everyone know that we're in the process of switching web hosts and that our website may be down on and off through Wednesday April 24. I apologize and we're working hard to get everything transferred over.

What population would you like to see us add to our STR DNA database next? The first population to be mentioned in the comments is the one I'll make an effort to obtain first in 2024!

We've been fortunate to add several simulated populations to our database over the last year. Although simulated/synthetic data is not peer-reviewed population data, the data comprising our simulated populations often deliver excellent results, providing our customers with further clues concerning their ancestry. I've always felt that science shouldn't be boring, and that it's crucial not to remove the element that we as human beings can creatively contribute apart from technology.

The four primary variables affecting ancestry DNA test precision include: number and breadth of world populations in the database, number of DNA markers used, viability of the DNA data, and types of applied DNA interrogation techniques. Ideally, all four of these variables should be top notch. Although you can, to a degree, elevate the performance of several variables in order to generate excellent results despite having several variables which are lagging. After all, most of us use simulated/synthetic products on a daily basis (oil, cotton, rubber, aspirin, sweeteners, weather and economic predictions etc.). Although perhaps not quite as desirable as the real deal, synthetics offer many advantages. Lastly, our simulated 3A (Sim 3A) populations are constructed from at least two unrelated people from that particular population, so they are not entirely synthetic after all. Perhaps statistically enhanced would be a better term. We'll continue striving to improve!

*Simulated populations added to our database over the last year include:

Comanche (Texas Hill Country) - Sim 3A
Taino (Bahamas) - Sim 3A
Occaneechi Saponi (North Carolina) - Sim 3A
Amerindian (Northeast North Carolina) - Sim 3A
Mi'kmaq (Canada) - Sim 3A
Fort Ancient Culture - Sim 3A
Powhatan (Virginia) - Sim 3A
Amerindian (Northern Blue Ridge & Piedmont) - Sim 3A
Chickasaw (Mississippi) - Sim 3A
Chickasaw - Sim 2
Iroquoian & Algonquian (Northeast USA and Canada) - Sim 3A
Lenni Lenape - Sim 3A
Lumbee (North Carolina) - Sim 3A
Cherokee (North Carolina) - Sim 3A
Creek (Alabama) - Sim 3A
Native American (Johnston County, NC) - Sim 3A

This is more than worth a listen. It may help some better understand why they match our Western Fort Ancient Culture population (Previously listed in our database as Western Ohio Hopewell). Love this stuff!

Ohio's Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks are the 25th site in the United States — and the first in Ohio — added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
