Great post from a colleague in the UK showing the different muscles that work through and endurance running gait cycle. Bear in mind there will be differences person to person!

Peak loads on the calf, hamstrings and hip flexors will increase significantly with faster running and sprinting.

A great example that you are not just your xray!
It’s amazing how many “bad”, “bone on bone”, “the knee of a 90 year old” reported images I have seen where the person is functioning very well or gets back to things without any invasive intervention! The human body is amazing!!!

I had a rare break in clinic schedule and was able to make my first Huntsville pub run! What a large group considering how cold it was and I really appreciated the friendliness to a newcomer! I’d seen the fun pictures from their previous runs and had wanted to join them, and am glad I finally could! Thanks to Jeff and Gerri Plain and We Run Downtown Huntsville for organizing these runs! I would encourage you to join them!!!

This post is spot on and something similar to what I tell young athletes. Manage sleep, stress, diet, do some strength and cross training snd enjoy your sports! Try and stay injury free through your younger years, nurture the talent and see what develops over time. In so many athletes what they achieve at 13-16 or even older is not predictive of college or pro success!

Huge shout out to the volunteers with , the police and hemsi, and all of the athletes. Also thanks to who took great photos as ever and for for sponsoring the photos!

The daily mail isn’t always known as the best source of information 🤣 But this is a really good article by a leading medical doctor in the UK about the risks of NSAIDs (e.g. ibuprofen) and heat stroke in marathons. Having worked with many runners who have tried to use medication to get them through races, this is well worth a read, especially given the temperatures we can get here. Stay safe!
This coming Sunday over 50,000 people will be taking part in the London Marathon; that's just over 26 miles of blood, sweat and tears - and then adrenaline, as the runners cross the finish line.

I graduated and started work as a physical therapist in 2003 in my native London. After five-years I met a young American lady, we married, and moved to Huntsville (shocker - she is an engineer!). After jumping through some red tape I received my board license and started working for a large orthopedic group. My experience there was great, seeing some awesome patients, working with some very knowledgeable doctors and managing some awesome therapists and support staff. I am thankful for the opportunities it gave me, but during that time I observed how insurance would dictate what we could do with patients (treatments, schedule, etc), often limiting our ability to provide the best levels of treatment. In particular, I saw a good number of athletes (particularly high-school and college students) returning with reinjury (sometimes serious) because insurance does not pay for rehab back to sports. These people had the option of self-pay, but rates were high and were dependent upon the units of care provided (these might vary from appointment to appointment. Very few people took up this option.
To address the above issues I opened PhysioWorks in 2015. My goal was to provide a highly tailored level of care that would take a person from their injury all the way back to full recovery and participation in the activities and sports they want to do. I wanted to be able to help people become more healthy and also to prevent injury. With insurance being the limiting factor I decided that PhysioWorks would be an out-of-network clinic with a fixed hourly rate. Some might look at the rate and think it is expensive relative to their copay, but when you look at an EOB (explanation of benefits) and see what the insurance company pays in-network clinics you will see that our price is of great value. We are certainly not doing this for the money; If we had opened a typical PT clinic we could be making a significant amount more money, but I would have had the same frustrations.
As I write and reflect, I am thankful for the opportunities that owning my own business have given. With respect to my patients, I am meeting the goals that I set - I am seeing people return to their sports successfully, even better than they were before the injury. I am seeing people meet goals that they have had for years and not been able to achieve (e.g. Boston marathon qualification and completion). Personally, I am enjoying watching the results of this, watching the positive reviews and word of mouth stories grow. I am also enjoying the flexibility and reduced stress it has given me in caring for my young family.
I have worked with people at all stages of life, from pediatric to geriatric, from high-school to professional athlete. Although I have experience in most areas of physical therapy, PhysioWorks will not treat every condition as I cannot do so and honestly say I am giving you best care. My most recent years have been spent with an interest in orthopedics and sports injuries. So, for example, I can provide a high level of care for patients with neck and back pain, shoulder and knee injuries, running and baseball injuries. But, for other issues, there are people with a different skill-set who can better help. For example, my recent experience and professional development are not in in developmental pediatrics, neurological issues (e.g. stroke), or hand therapy. If someone calls and it is not in my realm of expertise I will refer out so that they have the chance of getting the best treatment possible. This has allowed me to really focus my continuing education (course, reading of books and journals, etc) and provide the best level of care for active adults who experience orthopedic and sports issues.
If you ever have an orthopedic or sports concern I am more than happy to talk to you on the phone or correspond over email or Facebook messenger. If you are unsure if PT can help you, I offer free screenings. If PT is not the answer to your issue I will help you find the right person to see. If you have a friend or family member please let them know what I am doing!
