The Gut & Autism101: What Parents Should Know 👫

Many parents don’t realize how strongly the gut affects behavior, speech, sleep, and emotional regulation in autistic children.

When the gut is inflamed or unbalanced, it can show up as:

🙂‍↔️More stimming

😣More meltdowns

🫢Delayed speech

🧐Trouble focusing

🤯Sensory overload

😴Poor sleep

Foods that may trigger discomfort or overload:

🐞Artificial dyes (red 40, yellow 5, blue 1)

🍫High sugar snacks

🍞Gluten (for some children)

🥛Dairy (for some children)

🌭Processed foods

🥫Foods with preservatives

Gentle swaps to try:
🍇🥦🫐🥕
Fresh fruit instead of candy

Dye‑free snacks 🥨🥝🫒

Simple whole foods🫘🥜🍱

Probiotics (yogurt, kefir, or doctor‑approved supplements)
🥭🍑🫛🥦🥥🍉
More water daily 🫗

Every child is different🥰 — but small changes can make big improvements in mood, speech, and comfort.😁

Feeding Challenges & Sensory Eating 101🤓
Autistic children may avoid foods 🚫 because of:
• Texture
• Smell
• Temperature
• Color
Try:
• Food chaining
• Visual menus
• Letting them explore food without pressure
Mealtime should feel FUN, not stressful. 😋

TIPS THAT HELPED ME:
🌈 TRY THIS:
Offer visual menus or picture choices.
(I pick out two of the many food choices, just to help narrow down her decision vs allowing her to choose one out of ten of the food items).

Let your child explore food without pressure.
(When I explore new foods with A'mara, it's mostly when were out somewhere eating, or at a gathering. I personally have seen her not eat my beans lol😅😂 and go over Grandma house and eat her beans all up with seconds 🤣).

Use food chaining to introduce new textures gradually.
(I use Flash Cards, and I cut out the images of her favorite foods and uses them as well to show her what I am cooking, and what she is getting ready to eat. She loves to sit in the kitchen and watch me cook and I also include her in on simple tasks. Ex. Help place biscuits on the pan, or whip up the cake mix and roll out the cookie dough etc.)

MEALTIME should feel FUN, not stressful.
Connection always comes before correction. 💙🧩

Together, we create peace — one piece at a time.

Teaching Basic Communication 101 (Verbal or Nonverbal)
Start with:
• Pointing
• Gestures
• Picture choices
• Simple signs
• One‑word requests
Communication is not just speech — it’s connection.

AAC for Nonverbal or Minimally Verbal Children
AAC is not “a last resort.”
It’s a bridge to independence.
Options include:
• Picture Exchange (PECS)
• Communication boards
• Speech‑generating devices
• Apps like Proloquo2Go
Every child deserves a voice.

What is ACC? The term Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) describe any means of communication, aside from traditional speech, that allows someone to use language. This can include using pictures, gestures, sign language, visual aids, or speech-output devices like computers.

💙🧩 A MELTDOWN IS NOT BAD BEHAVIOR — IT’S A MOMENT TO CONNECT. 🧩💙
I’ve learned that understanding my daughter, A’Mara, means slowing down and truly paying attention.
There was a time when I moved fast — chasing goals, checking boxes, trying to make every minute count. But A’Mara taught me something deeper: time doesn’t matter when connection is missing.

When we go places now, I walk hand‑in‑hand with her — at her pace.
I don’t drag or rush her, because that only overwhelms her and leads to tears or a meltdown.
Instead, I match her rhythm, breathe with her, and let her lead the way.

One day at the grocery store, a woman stopped me and said,

“I love how you walk with your child and not pull her along — it speaks volumes. You’re a good mother.”

That moment touched me deeply. I didn’t realize how much I had changed until someone else saw it.
It reminded me that even when we think we’re not doing enough, someone out there sees our effort — and knows we’re doing our best.

💛 REMEMBER THIS:
A meltdown isn’t bad behavior.
It’s a nervous system overload.
Your child isn’t giving you a hard time — they’re having a hard time.

Respond with safety, calm, and connection.
Because sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do is simply slow down and walk beside them.

Together, we create peace — one piece at a time. 💙🧩🌈
