Many new cultivars were bred for ‘style over substance.’ So if you want to plant a pollinator garden, choose carefully.

Myoga ginger (Zingiber mioga), the only true ginger I know of that's hardy to our climate. After a year of storing up energy and spreading its roots, it's finally put up four flower stalks in these beautiful white and pink shades. The flowers are the edible part, and are traditionally used to ornament sushi. Shade-loving and nearly effortless to grow, why doesn't everyone have these?

Most likely for higher elevations, but I'd recommend picking nearly-ripe tomatoes and peppers anyway. It's not here yet,...
