Did you know that prolonged sitting in desk based roles has been linked to higher rates of heart disease, even in otherwise healthy adults?

🤍💙 American Heart Month is a great time to remember that heart risks are not only found in physically demanding jobs.

The good news is that small changes during the workday can support heart health:

🪑 Stand up and move for a few minutes every hour
🚶 Take short walking breaks during the day
🧍 Hold standing or walking meetings when possible
💧 Stay hydrated to support circulation and overall wellness
🧘 Stretch regularly to reduce stiffness and improve blood flow

At PPI, we know healthy habits and safe workplaces go hand in hand. Encouraging movement during the workday supports both employee wellness and long term productivity. 🤍💙

As Random Acts of Kindness Week comes to a close, remember that even small gestures of support can make a big difference in the workplace.

Taking a moment to check in on a colleague’s wellbeing. Asking how their day is going, noticing if they seem stressed, or simply listening shows care and strengthens team connections.

Kindness can also mean sharing your knowledge or guidance. Answering questions, clarifying a process, or helping someone learn a new task reduces stress, builds confidence, and creates a culture of collaboration.

Thoughtful support and consideration like this ripple beyond the moment; lifting morale, increasing confidence, and fostering safer, more empowered teams. 💙

🖤 Black History Month: Trailblazer Spotlight

Although there are many African American trailblazers, men and women who have transformed workforce safety, apprenticeships, career training, and education; this Black History Month we’d like to spotlight Booker T. Washington for his incredible impact.

Born into slavery in 1856, Washington became a pioneering advocate for vocational and industrial education, believing that practical skills could provide economic independence and long-term success. He founded the Tuskegee Institute, where students learned trades, industrial skills, and leadership — setting a standard for workforce development programs that still inspires us today.

His focus on opportunity, self-reliance, and community advancement resonates with PPI’s mission. Through our apprenticeships, occupational health services, and workforce training programs, we carry forward his vision of equitable access to skills, safe workplaces, and meaningful careers.

Booker T. Washington’s legacy reminds us that investing in education and workforce readiness strengthens communities, uplifts employees, and builds safer, more resilient workplaces. 💙🩶

Today, February 17th, is Random Acts of Kindness Day; and there’s no better way to celebrate than spreading thoughtfulness at work!

Small gestures can have a big impact on apprentices, employees, and workplace culture.

Ideas for kindness today:

💼 Give a colleague a genuine compliment on their work
📝 Offer to assist with a tricky task or project
☕ Bring coffee or a small treat for your team
📣 Publicly acknowledge an employee or apprentice for their achievements
🤝 Mentor or guide someone who’s learning a new skill

Even the smallest act can boost morale, strengthen relationships, and inspire others to pay it forward. A culture of kindness creates safer, more motivated, and more resilient teams. 💙

Random Acts of Kindness Week is the perfect time to uplift someone in your team. Offering sincere encouragement by praising progress, acknowledging effort, or sharing confidence in their abilities, can transform a workplace.

For apprentices and employees, recognition fosters motivation, builds confidence, and strengthens engagement. It can inspire individuals to tackle challenges more effectively, feel more connected to the team, and increase overall productivity.

A few words of support can have a ripple effect, creating a culture where employees feel valued and empowered. 🖤💙

🇺🇸 Presidents Day: Reflecting on American Values 💙🩶

Presidents Day traces back to the celebration of George Washington’s birthday and has become a time to reflect on the history, leadership, and ideals that define our nation.

Opportunity, hard work, and the belief that people can build better futures are deeply rooted American values. At PPI, we see those values in action through workforce development, safety training, and programs that help individuals from all backgrounds grow their skills and careers.

Strong communities are built by people who are given the chance to learn, work, and thrive. 🇺🇸

🤍💙 American Heart Month is a powerful reminder that cardiac emergencies can happen anywhere, including the workplace.

When cardiac arrest occurs, immediate CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival. That is why CPR and AED training is not just helpful, it is a critical safety investment.

Workplaces can take simple, life saving steps:

❤️ Provide regular CPR and AED training for employees
⚡ Make sure AED devices are clearly marked and easy to access
📍 Post emergency response steps in visible areas
👷 Include emergency response practice in safety meetings and drills
🗣 Encourage employees to act quickly and confidently in an emergency

Prepared teams save lives. At PPI, we believe safety training builds confidence, strengthens workplaces, and protects what matters most: your people. 🤍💙

Policies that affect education and training pathways also affect the future workforce — including healthcare and nursing roles that keep communities safe. 🏥

PPI encourages business leaders, workforce partners, and community members to submit a public comment today. A template and background information are available here ➡️ bit.ly/4rtXbaz

After the comment period closes, every single submission must be reviewed. Your voice can help decision makers better understand the real world impact on training pipelines, career pathways, and the people preparing to serve in critical roles.

The Tri-Council for Nursing calls on all nurses to submit public comments requesting the inclusion of post-baccalaureate nursing degrees (MSN, DNP, Ph.D.) explicitly in the list of professional degrees before the March 2 deadline.

🤍💙 Today is National Wear Red Day, a powerful reminder that heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. Raising awareness is not just personal, it is professional too. A heart healthy workforce is safer, more alert, and better prepared to respond in emergencies.

At PPI, we know workplace wellness and safety go hand in hand. Encouraging movement during shifts, reducing stress, and knowing the signs of heart attack and cardiac arrest can make a life saving difference.

Did you know that immediate CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival? That is why training and preparedness matter on every job site.

Wear red today to spark conversations about heart health at work and at home. Small actions can lead to life saving outcomes. 🤍💙

🖤 Black History Month. Honoring Leadership, Opportunity, and Inclusion 💙🩶

Black History Month is a time to honor the history, resilience, and contributions of African Americans, and to recognize the ongoing importance of inclusion, equity, and opportunity in our communities and workplaces.

We also celebrate African American trailblazers whose leadership helped expand access to education, workforce training, and safer working conditions, foundations that continue to shape workforce development today. Here are a few of those trailblazers:

🖤 Booker T. Washington championed vocational and industrial education as a pathway to economic opportunity, helping establish skills based training as a respected route to stable careers.

🖤 A. Philip Randolph, founder of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, organized one of the first major Black labor unions and fought for fair wages, workplace dignity, and safer working conditions.

🖤 Mary McLeod Bethune, educator and founder of Bethune Cookman University, advanced education, leadership development, and workforce preparation for Black Americans and women.

🖤 Dorothy Height dedicated her life to civil rights and economic equity, advocating for access to employment, education, and advancement for all.

Their work laid critical groundwork for inclusive training pathways and stronger, safer workplaces.

At PPI, we are committed to carrying these values forward through inclusive apprenticeships, occupational health services, and workforce development programs that support businesses, workers, and communities across South Dakota.

Honoring Black history also means continuing to build workplaces where opportunity, safety, and respect are available to everyone. 💙🩶
