Urge Incontinence Isnโ€™t โ€œJust Part of Being Activeโ€

Do you feel a sudden, intense need to urinate thatโ€™s hard to controlโ€”especially during workouts, running, or sport? Thatโ€™s urge incontinence, and itโ€™s more common in active individuals than you may think.

๐Ÿšจ Key point: Urge incontinence is not always about weakness. Often, itโ€™s related to pelvic floor overactivity, poor coordination, or nervous system up-regulationโ€”especially in athletes and highly active people.

Why active people experience urge incontinence:

โ€ข High-impact or repetitive loading
โ€ข Constant core bracing or gripping
โ€ข Limited pelvic floor relaxation
โ€ข Stress, fatigue, or high training volumes
โ€ข History of holding urine during training or competition

How Pelvic Floor Therapy Helps:

Pelvic floor therapy for active individuals focuses on control, coordination, and performance, not just Kegels.

โœ”๏ธ Pelvic floor relaxation & downtraining
โœ”๏ธ Bladder retraining strategies
โœ”๏ธ Breathing and pressure management during lifts and impact
โœ”๏ธ Sport-specific movement retraining
โœ”๏ธ Core and hip integration for dynamic control

You deserve to train without fear of urgency or leaks.

Pelvic floor therapy helps active people regain confidence, control, and freedom of movementโ€”so your bladder doesnโ€™t dictate your workouts.

๐Ÿ’ช Strong doesnโ€™t mean tight. Control matters.

Meet Jacob!

Jacob came to us after an ankle sprain was keeping him from catching or pitching during baseball.

He was referred to us by a teammate.

We were able to incorporate different pitching drills and positions to make sure he could push off the injured ankle and return to pitching.

Good luck on your senior season, Jacob ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ

ACLR End-Stage Rehab: Why 9+ Months Matters ๐Ÿฆต๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ

Returning to sport after an ACL reconstruction isnโ€™t just about feeling โ€œgood enoughโ€ โ€” itโ€™s about being ready. Evidence shows that completing 9+ months of structured rehab significantly lowers re-tear and contralateral ACL injury rates compared to earlier return.

Why the last phase of rehab is critical:
โ€ข Strength alone isnโ€™t enough โ€” power, rate of force development, and fatigue resistance must be restored
โ€ข Neuromuscular control and movement quality must hold up under speed, load, and chaos
โ€ข Confidence and psychological readiness play a major role in reinjury risk

The danger of returning too early:
Athletes returning before 9 months show markedly higher reinjury rates, even when range of motion and basic strength appear โ€œnormal.โ€ The graft, nervous system, and movement patterns need adequate time and progressive exposure to sport demands.

โธป

What End-Stage Rehab Should Include

โœ”๏ธ Lower-extremity strength symmetry (often โ‰ฅ90โ€“95%)
โœ”๏ธ Isometric quadriceps testing to objectively assess true quad capacity
โœ”๏ธ Plyometric progressions (linear โ†’ multidirectional โ†’ reactive)
โœ”๏ธ Deceleration, cutting, and change-of-direction training
โœ”๏ธ Fatigue-based drills to reflect real game demands
โœ”๏ธ Psychological readiness and confidence under pressure

Why Isometric Quad Testing Matters
Quadriceps deficits are one of the strongest predictors of poor outcomes and reinjury after ACLR. Isometric testing allows clinicians to:
โ€ข Quantify peak force and limb symmetry accurately
โ€ข Identify lingering quad inhibition not seen in functional tasks
โ€ข Track progress objectively over time
โ€ข Ensure the quad can tolerate high loads before return to sport

Strong quads are essential for knee control during landing, deceleration, and cutting โ€” all high-risk moments for ACL injury.

โธป

Sport-Specific Testing Is Essential

Return-to-sport decisions should never be time-based alone. Athletes need objective, sport- and position-specific testing, including:
โ€ข Isometric quad strength benchmarks
โ€ข Single-leg hop and power tests
โ€ข Cutting and pivoting mechanics
โ€ข Reactive agility and decision-making drills
โ€ข Position-specific movements at game spe

Congrats to Mason for graduating PT! ๐Ÿ‘

Mason is a middle school athlete who sustained a subchondral fracture after hyperextending his knee playing football.

Once we had the go-ahead from his orthopedic doctor to fully weight bear, we worked on addressing knee instability and regaining hip and knee strength.

Now heโ€™s back to running and participating in sports unrestricted. Let us know if you have an athlete thatโ€™s needing to make a comeback from an injury!

Meet Morgan !

Morgan is arguable the fittest person I know. She came to us with hip and shoulder injuries after a summer full of hybrid fitness competitions and running.

In addition to that, she also regularly boxes and takes jujitsu classes.

She has a fitness test to get ready for in March for a career change and knew she needed to get herself right before then.

Sheโ€™s back to being Mighty Mo now ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ

Hypermobility Training: Building Stability for Long-Term Strength & Quality of Life

Hypermobility isnโ€™t about being too flexibleโ€”itโ€™s about lacking the stability needed to control motion. While mobility may come easily, joint control, strength, and endurance often require intentional training.

A successful hypermobility-focused program prioritizes:

โœ”๏ธ Stability first
Targeted joint stabilization and neuromuscular control help protect lax joints and reduce pain with daily and athletic movements.

โœ”๏ธ Global strengthening
Strengthening beyond isolated musclesโ€”focusing on the core, hips, shoulders, and posterior chainโ€”creates full-body support and improves movement efficiency.

โœ”๏ธ Controlled loading
Progressive resistance training teaches the body how to absorb force safely, improving confidence with lifting, sport, and functional tasks.

โœ”๏ธ Manual therapy support
Techniques such as dry needling and soft tissue mobilization can reduce protective muscle tension, improve tissue quality, and allow patients to move more comfortably while building strength.

The goal isnโ€™t to restrict movementโ€”itโ€™s to train control, resilience, and trust in your body. With the right combination of stability training, global strengthening, and skilled manual therapy, individuals with hypermobility can experience less pain, improved performance, and an improved quality of life.

โœจ Strong doesnโ€™t mean stiff. Strong means supported.

Marsha came to us after 3 achilles surgeries ๐Ÿ˜ฉ and hadn't been referred to PT until her 3rd surgery (which is mind blowing to all of us).

Her heel would swell, her scar had adhesions on it, and he couldn't go up onto her toes due to a lot of weakness and pain.

She was determined to work through her pain and avoid and future surgeries.

Just know, if you have any type of orthopedic surgery you SHOULD go to PT. You can also call us directly without a doctors referral if your doctor isn't advocating for PT.

๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ Postpartum + Athletic + Hypermobile?
Your Pelvic Floor Deserves a Different Kind of Rehab.

If youโ€™re an athlete with hypermobility, postpartum recovery hits different.
Your body isnโ€™t just โ€œweakโ€โ€”itโ€™s navigating laxity, load tolerance changes, hormone shifts, and a pelvic floor thatโ€™s been working overtime to stabilize what your ligaments canโ€™t.

And hereโ€™s the truth: returning to lifting, running, or high-impact training without a pelvic plan is one of the biggest reasons athletes stay stuck in pain or setbacks.

โœจ Pelvic Physical Therapy Can Help You:
โ€ข Rebuild deep core coordination (beyond just โ€œsqueeze your absโ€)
โ€ข Improve pelvic stability when ligaments are naturally lax
โ€ข Manage prolapse symptoms under load
โ€ข Reduce leaking with jumping, sprinting, and heavy lifts
โ€ข Resolve pelvic pain, hip pinching, tailbone pain, or SI joint instability
โ€ข Train pressure management so you can lift heavier without symptoms
โ€ข Build a return-to-sport plan that respects postpartum physiology AND hypermobility

This isnโ€™t a โ€œrest and hopeโ€ approach.
Itโ€™s a progressive, athletic rehab plan that rebuilds your pelvic floor as part of your whole kinetic chainโ€”glutes, core, breath mechanics, power output, and mobility patterns.

๐Ÿ’ฅ You can be strong again.
๐Ÿ’ฅ You can lift heavy again.
๐Ÿ’ฅ You can run, jump, sprint, and push intensity again.
You just need the right roadmap.

If youโ€™re an athlete juggling hypermobility, postpartum healing, and big goalsโ€ฆ youโ€™re exactly who pelvic rehab is made for.

๐Ÿ“ฉ Message to start your personalized return-to-sport pelvic program.

Jenna is coming to PT primarily to address longstanding back pain, although weโ€™ve now been tackling newer hip concerns and tennis elbow as well.

Recent x-rays revealed degenerative disc disease, which is an extremely common condition present in 37% of people by age 20, rising to 80% of people by age 50.

Spinal disc degeneration is a natural process of aging, and while it is inevitable it certainly does not have to mean it is destined to be eternally symptomatic.

Receiving news of musculoskeletal disorders can be jarring, but physical therapy can provide as a great roadmap to navigate how to take actionable steps to mitigate the impact of structural changes that occur in the body. Donโ€™t feel like you are stuck up a creek without a paddleโ€”the human body is resilient and adaptable!
