Great news! 🎉 Employment Specialist Anthony Frischenmeyer recently spoke on behalf of Beyond Barriers at the Hutchinson City Council meeting, accepting a proclamation declaring October as Disability Employment Awareness Month!

"Beyond Barriers helps employers realize that not only can they hire people with disabilities, they should. It's an untapped group of people who may not have ever been given a chance for employment. And they may become your best employee."

✨ At Beyond Barriers, we believe that disabilities aren’t “one size fits all.” Whether it’s how you were born, something that happened later in life, or even one that’s invisible to everyone but you—we serve people with ALL disabilities, free of charge.

The safety and individual needs of people with disabilities during disasters and emergencies is one of our top priorities and we are grateful to officially partner with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) Kansas Syndromic Surveillance Program (KSSP) through our Kansas Association of Centers for Independent Living (KACIL). This partnership is "a nationally recognized effort to improve how real-time healthcare discharge data reflects the experiences of people with disabilities during disasters and extreme weather events." (-KDHE news release, Aug. 1, 2025)
Kansas is one of only three jurisdictions selected by the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) to pilot this program - which will work to ensure that real-time health and discharge data will include and accurately reflect the experiences and health outcomes of people with disabilities.

PILR History

Prairie Independent Living Resource Center (PILR) began operation on January 15, 1997. At that time, PILR was being mentored by Topeka Independent Living Resource Center (TILRC). They referred to us as “The Hutch Center”. The center became a separate entity June 16, 1998 and was named Prairie Independent Living Resource Center, Inc. or (PILR). In 1997, there were 6 full-time and 1 part-time staff. Over the years, the staff has increased and PILR now has three offices. In addition, the center has numerous volunteers and provides services to consumers in various counties across the state. To better meet consumer needs, PILR opened a satellite office in Pratt in late 2006 and in Dodge city in the summer of 2011. In April 2001, PILR moved the Hutchinson office from its original building to a larger more accessible and prominent location to accommodate additional staff and a growing number of consumers and services. In 2017, PILR was able to open a part time office in Newton, as well.
