Today many students learn together in inclusive classrooms.

Inclusive education benefits children with and without disabilities.

Kids learn acceptance by living it.

Sometimes inclusion starts with facing what feels unfamiliar. 🐍🧡

This is Xerxes, our 10-year-old Ball Python at Simple Sparrow Care Farm. When children first meet him, many are curious—but also very afraid. Most have never been around a snake before, so they don’t know what to expect or how to interact with him.

But something amazing happens when they slow down, stay calm, and take time to learn about Xerxes.

They discover that he is gentle, calm, and incredibly patient. By the end of their visit, the same children who were nervous at first are often asking, “Can I hold him?” And many say Xerxes becomes their favorite animal at the farm.

That’s the heart of inclusion.

Inclusion isn’t just about being in the same space.
It’s about taking the time to understand one another.

Just like getting to know Xerxes helps people see that he’s a calm, friendly snake, getting to know people who are different from us helps us move past fear and into connection.

Sometimes understanding begins with simply saying:
“I’m willing to learn.”

Labels used to replace identity.

Person-centered support focuses on the individual, not just the diagnosis.

A diagnosis explains needs — it doesn’t define a person.

What makes your child uniquely them?

Decisions were made for people instead of with them.

Teaching autonomy builds independence and confidence.

Choice is a developmental skill.

Where can kids practice decision-making today?

Save for later reflection.

Expectations used to be incredibly low.

Presuming competence changes how adults support children with developmental disabilities.

Kids grow into expectations placed around them.

What strengths have you seen in a child others underestimated?

There were no legal protections for access.

Disability rights laws changed education, work, and community life.

Rights create opportunity.

Did you know these protections are relatively recent?
