July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the unique challenges that racial and ethnic minorities in the United States face regarding mental health.
Mental health disparities persist across racial and ethnic minority groups in the United States. According to the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants, in 2022, Hispanic, Black, and Asian adults were less likely to receive mental health services compared to White adults, even when experiencing mental illness. Specifically, 40% of Hispanic, 38% of Black, and 36% of Asian adults with any mental illness received mental health services, compared to 56% of White adults.
Many obstacles contribute to this disparity, including a lack of health insurance, limited access to treatment, and stigma surrounding mental illness. Cultural insensitivity and the lack of culturally competent screening tools also contribute to underdiagnosis and underreporting of mental illness among people of color.
This means behavioral health firms like Interdynamics, Inc. matter more now than ever. Our presence in this field is not just about representation—it’s about relevance and resonance. We understand the silent grief, the pressure to “just push through,” and the fear of being misunderstood by a provider who doesn’t “get it."
