What you’re looking at is not a discarded cigarette package, it’s a detailed painting by artist Tom Pfannerstill on a carved piece of basswood. His artworks are made based on objects he finds in the street, which he carefully catalogs, noting the time and place of each. These re-created artifacts act as a very personal record of his movements through time and space. For him, creating these 3D memories is “strangely comforting in a world that is increasingly electronic and virtual”.

San Francisco-based visual artist Peter Combe creates three-dimensional artworks using household paint swatches as his prime matter, usually hand-punched into small disks. He then fits these disks into bevel-cut grooves on a specially prepared archival material in order to create his pieces, ranging from abstract pattern-based colour compositions to realistic portraits of people. Apart from producing portraits commissioned by collectors, Combe also likes to work with images found on social media, especially Instagram. What he finds interesting in working with these images is the contrast between the fleeting, impermanent nature of social media platforms and the more fixed and enduring nature of his artworks, which as he says achieves a sense of ''captured history,'' much like a vintage photograph. via Yatzer

Rather geek-y post here. At Reebok I had the pleasure to meet Syd Mead one the principal visual concept designers of Blade Runner, Tron & Aliens …and the list goes on. He came in for an inspirational design camp and bent our minds for a few days. After his visit he kept in touch with me and I had dinner with him and his partner a few times. He would drive around LA in his flamboyant 1970's Cadillac and take me to crazy restaurants. Someone made him a cake and put it on his FB page today. One of the best b-day cakes ever. Happy 81st Syd Mead!

Photographer Brendan Fitzpatrick just released three new collections of x-ray photos including toys, creatures, and a new set of flowers, as part of his Invisible Light series. The photos are created with the help of a standard x-ray machine, but are artificially colored to help distinguish different materials. Prints of almost all of the images are available through Behance.
