Want to age slower? I have been in the medical field for 17 years as an RN and PA. I have cared for thousands of patients, including those at the end of life. What I have seen as the healthiest indicator for how a person ages is how active they are.

Whether it’s simply walking, all the way up to skiing, scuba diving or insane hikes; those that do something active are the ones that are more often able to recover quickly from injuries and appear to age slower. I’m talking 80s that I’ve mistaken for 60s. My active patients are generally much healthier than sedentary ones.

Good nutrition and not smoking are definitely up on the important list as well, and I’m sure there is some correlation about those staying active and making other good health decisions as well.

And this is not to shame anyone. I am happy to help all of my patients no matter how they come to me. But that is why I stress activity to patients. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. Motion is lotion. Get moving, eat healthy, don’t smoke, don’t drink too much alcohol, and then hopefully you won’t have to see us as often. 😂

But if you do get hurt, we are more than happy to see you for all your concussion, headache, spine, joint, muscle, and/or nerve pain needs!

What is a Physiatrist and what do they do?

Physiatry is an enigma of a medical specialty.

If you break your arm everyone knows they should see an orthopedic surgeon. If you have high blood pressure, see an internist.

When most people hurt their back they don’t automatically think “I need to see a physiatrist.” Maybe they should. And that also goes for sports injuries, pain issues, and exercise questions. Physiatry is most certainly the most useful medical specialty you probably have never heard of.

Dr. Sarah Vlach is board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine (Physiatry). Dr. Andrew Cooper is board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.
