Mid-February to early May is Idaho Falls and its surrounding areas windiest part of the year. The average is 8.5 miles per hour (mph); however, we have also seen damaging wind gusts between 50-75 mph. The wind helps our quality of life by dispersing and reducing concentrations of pollutants in the air. However, with this dispersing comes moving debris. It only takes 3 mph to move a maple leaf. If you are a person that spends time outside on windy days it is vital you protect your eyes. Wearing safety goggles is an amazing benefit to protect against moving debris. To learn more about what to do if you get debris in your eye read “Foreign object in the eye: first aid" by the Mayo Clinic. (https://www.mayoclinic.org/first-aid/first-aid/basics/art-20056645)

John Lennon made golden round rim glasses with yellow lens his signature look. But yellow lens glasses are more than a fashion statement. It is well known that yellow lens glasses help give sport player an extra edge. You find yellow tint lenses in shooting, hunting, and golfing glasses. Why? The yellow lenses improve contrast.

This is why, last weekend when the sky was dreadfully overcast, with flurries of snow showers, I wore a pair of yellow tinted lenses for the drive.

According to RX SAFETY (https://rx-safety.com/2014/01/what-lens-color-is-best-for-overcast-days/) A lot of “blue light” is created on overcast days, and “ yellow lenses have an added benefit in low-light conditions: visual acuity and contrast will be noticeably sharpened. Blue light often creates a dull, hazy aura, and with a yellow lens to filter it out while still taking advantage of every bit of available incoming light, vision will seem brighter and clearer.”

I bought of pair of yellow glasses, claiming that they help with glare at night. The research for this latest craze of marketing has not been highly supported. For more details visit https://www.medpagetoday.com/ophthalmology/generalophthalmology/81500

If you are having glare (haze, or spikes off of lights) during night driving, you should start with making an appointment with Dr. Aaron J. Affleck. There are many eye conditions that causes bright reflective light, and glare from oncoming headlights, light poles and etc. which need treatment.

TAKE HOME MESSAGE:
Have a pair of yellow tinted glasses, or brown sunglass in your car for those hard to see cloud cover days but don’t use them for nighttime driving.
