Adding ostrich herl to a fly with impaired grip -

"This is how I add herl to my flies. As you can see I've gripped it in a clothespin. I don't like herl pliers because my grip's not strong enough to hold them...open them up. But I use a few wraps of thread - Waxed thread and then wrap that line up out of the way. And then I just use a rotating vise and the weight of that clothespin to keep the tension on that herl as you spin the vise. You can see that I use my fingers to keep it in alignment as it spins around there. And then once I get as much as I want on I just add a few more wraps of thread. And trim off the excess. If you noticed I kind of ruffled the feathers on the back there. So once I get that (excess herl) trimmed off, I adjust those feathers and then add a couple more wraps of thread and call it good."

​We’ve been moving fast lately—from the podcast and the shop to our new projects in South Dakota and the Making Memories expansion in Oklahoma. The mission is growing, and it’s time to bring in some fresh eyes to help us tell the story.
​We are looking for a Media Protégé / Intern to join the team part-time.

​Field Producer: Capturing the raw, authentic moments of the hunt and the hustle.
​Content Creator: Turning long-form footage and podcast episodes into "golden nuggets" for TikTok, Reels, and FB.
​The Apprentice: Learning our workflow from the ground up, with the goal of eventually earning a permanent seat at the table.
​The Requirements:
​Grit: You’ve gotta be able to handle the Oklahoma heat and the brush. If you’re worried about getting your boots dirty, this isn't for you.
​The Eye: You know how to frame a shot and tell a story through an edit.
​The Hustle: Reliability is everything. We need someone who shows up and stays hungry.
​You bring the drive; we’ll provide the platform, the mentorship, and the gear to help you level up.

Throwback to another great day with this beautiful steelhead...

Back to when I had a normal grip on a fishing rod and on fish. Would I choose to go through the things that happened to impair my grip? Probably not- but then I wouldn't have been able to bring the Grip n Rip to the people who need it. I don't think it would have ever been on my mind.

Throwback to this fun trip 🎣

I got educated by and on fly fishing for steelhead. I think they got about 5 to my one on average with my using standard gear. You guys remember that?

I don't currently hold fish like this, but thanks to the Grip n Rip i can grip my rod like I need to - and you can too!
