BoatUS Foundation Accepting Applications for New Life Jacket Loaner Pilot Program
Local organizations, businesses encouraged to apply to expand access to essential boating safety equipment in their communities
The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water is inviting marinas, parks, campgrounds, fire departments and other waterfront organizations to apply for a new pilot of its Life Jacket Loaner Program that will test digital checkout technology to make borrowing life jackets easier for boaters. Applications close March 27.
Participating sites will test options including 24/7 unstaffed loaner boards, staffed distribution sites, or secure digital lockers with automated checkout.
“These pilot models represent the next evolution of our long-standing Life Jacket Loaner Program”, said Tiffany Gonzalez, BoatUS Foundation Program Manager. “They allow us to connect with sites and borrowers in smarter ways, helping us better understand community needs, best practices, and program impact.”
The pilot is funded through a $375,000 grant from the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund administered by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Organizations interested in hosting the this unique life jacket loaner program can apply here before March 27.

And according to the MDNR, all anglers ages 17 and older are required to purchase a fishing license to fish public waters in Michigan; these licenses are good for all species, though additional reporting requirements apply to some species and fishing methods. An annual fishing license is $26 for Michigan residents or $76 for nonresidents (both carry an additional $1 surcharge). But seniors (65+) pay $11!

Gladwin County’s first CWD-positive deer
Gladwin is now the 18th Michigan county where chronic wasting disease has been identified in the wild deer population, according to the MDNR. A hunter-harvested deer from Clement Township recently tested positive for the disease.
The Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory confirmed the CWD finding. The sample was also sent for a secondary confirmation to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa, where results are pending but anticipated to confirm CWD infection.
Testing has identified a total of 376 CWD-positive wild deer in Michigan out of about 148,800 tested. Samples have been collected through a variety of efforts, including focused testing of hunter-harvested deer, response to public reports of sick deer, direct hunter submissions of deer to the MSU lab, and testing of donated deer.
To date, there have been no reported cases of CWD infection in people. However, as a precaution, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that infected animals not be consumed as food by either humans or domestic animals. Hunters should take precautions when field-dressing or processing deer: wear rubber gloves, minimize contact with the deer’s brain and spinal tissue, and wash hands with soap and warm water after handling any parts of the carcass.
