In October of 2005 hurricane Wilma passed directly over southwest Florida. The community of Immokalee was seriously damaged including the pregnancy center at the time, Immokalee Life and Family Center, which took damage to the roof, the structure and had lost almost all of the records, furnishings, equipment. Just about all that was left was a box of old materials soaked from the rain. The center was forced to close its doors, but thank God that’s not the end of the story!
Pastor Robert Selle, Executive Director of Amigos en Cristo (Pastor Bob) wanted to see the pregnancy center reopen and decided to provide a home for a new pregnancy center. At around the time Diane Hanson was at her final training before she was to resign from a pregnancy center she had been with for several years. During the training, a young woman named Laura kept bringing up the fact that her dad was trying to get a center off the ground. That woman just so happened to Pastor Robert’s daughter. One thing lead to another and Diane, along with some other likeminded individuals began working to reopen the center as Immokalee Pregnancy Center, Inc. and officially opened the office doors to the community of Immokalee August 18th, 2008.
Today we have 5 staff members and we are able to serve our clients in 3 languages. In a population that is approximately 70% Hispanic, 20% Haitian and 10% other, that matters. We hope to continue to come along side and provide support to help women as they make life-affirming choices for themselves and their babies.
