I've been privileged to have amazing men in my life. Here's two of them: my dad and my younger bro. Love them to life. I can't overstate the positive impact of being surrounded by safe men.

It allows you to truly relax. No need to constantly assess for threat, constantly be on guard. The relationships I have with these men (and my older bro too) directly impacts the work I do with male clients today. I'm able to assume the best and hold space for them because men have done the same for me.

I love that I get to be involved in the process of helping men become safe (physically and emotionally) for their loved ones. Incredibly rewarding work. I love it here.

It's easy to feel broken when the things that "should" be easy aren't. It's not a sign of brokenness. It's a sign of survival. Spend no time shaming yourself or beating yourself up. Spend all the time slowing down and learning new adaptations.

Healing is a lifelong journey that should never be confined to one small area of life. We often think of healing in terms of how we feel. "I feel better = healed."
I get it, but it's shortsighted. Let's expand beyond that. Are you healing how you eat, how you move your body? Are you healing how you show up in your community, with your friends and family? There's so much more to consider.

I see people speak in absolute about their mental health and lot. They speak as though its set in stone, no room or hope for change. But all of us have days where we're not our best and days where we're better.

The problem is that if you've been convinced that nothing is changing for you, you might not even notice those better days. You might not acknowledge and record them as a part of your life. You skip right over and blot them out like they never happened.

I encourage you to notice the days, hours, moments when you feel a little happier, a little lighter, a little more connected. Don't ignore those. They're important.

It's not always a cognitive memory, a specific event you can pull from your mind with time and date (especially when trauma happens in early childhood). Sometimes, it's just the sensation, the internal push and pull of something that won't rest (anxiety) or won't move (depression). Sometimes, it's an unrest in the soul, a churning in the belly. Tense shoulders, clutched handed, gritted teeth. Constant bracing for impact. The body learned early it can't afford to relax.

Don't be alarmed if you can't find the memories. Just notice the symptoms and look for current evidence that you're safe NOW, in this exact moment.

Humans are naturally sensitive beings. We become more sensitive when we go through scary and or damaging events that overwhelm our internal resources (ie, trauma). Notice I'm using "sensitive" simply as a descriptive term, not a judgement.

Realizing that we have increased sensitivity can help us slow down and interrupt the activation that happens when things happen that feel similar to past hurt.

I notice my increased sensitivity when I start to feel like a burden. That's when I know something has been activated in me.

What do you notice in yourself when you're activated (triggered)? ๐Ÿค”

Who are the people, things, and thoughts we need to keep close for stable mental health? It doesn't just happen miraculously (especially in a society that isn't built for it). It's something we have to plan for and work at. Don't be discouraged bc it doesn't just happen for you. It doesn't just happen for most.

Vulnerability always feels uncomfortable when it hasn't gone well in the past. You've learned through trial and error not to do it, but we've got to learn new things if we're going to evolve. Don't keep things bottled up. The mental and physical impact is far too costly.

Did you know you can change your inner dialogue? It's not something that's set in stone that you have no control over. It's a result of the messaging you've received. It's never too late to start sending new messages.

We all get triggered at some point or another. Too often, our response is to get angry and run away, too put distance between self and the offending agent. That works in the short run, but it does nothing to help us learn about WHY we're triggered and what's beneath it. Don't run away. Explore.

Never be discouraged if therapy isn't an option for you right now. Healing is something humans have been doing since the beginning of time, long before the concept of therapy was a thing. In addition to new information and insight, we need the warmth and resonance of other people if we want to improve. Surround yourself with the right people to aid in your transformation.

What I Know of Healing

What Iโ€™ve realized is that you donโ€™t have to be โ€œdoneโ€ with your own work to help usher others into their own. This journey of healing and self-discovery is never ending. No one is ever done, but the healthy are always moving. Sometimes quickly, sometimes imperceptibly slow, but always forward. And during those moments of inevitable stillness when the path becomes unclear, patience, compassion and commitment will always see us through.
