Thriving!
Meet Richard and Linda. They have lived at The Fountains for just over two years. They chose us because of all the active people they could socialize with, and because of all the activities. Since moving, Richard and Linda have become great friends and neighbors to so many.
Linda grew up in northern Missouri, and Richard grew up in southern Iowa. The two met at church. They married about a year after Linda graduated from high school, and when Richard returned from serving in the US Marine Corps. When Richard found a new job at Allis Chalmers, the couple moved to the Independence area where they raised their son and daughter. They now boast being the grandparents to five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and they are excited to have their first great-great-grandchild coming later this year!
Richard worked at Allis Chalmers, building combines, for about 5 years. He then took classes for refrigeration, heating, and cooling. This training allowed him to be self-employed, and he serviced all of the United Super Stores. Having become a member of the Pipefitters Local 533, Richard eventually went to work for a contractor. After 25 years, he retired from the Pipefitters.
Richard and Linda also owned a nine-unit apartment complex which kept them very busy. Linda managed the property, but she didn't shy away from painting or doing yardwork. Richard was able to take car of maintenance issues.
Some of the couple's fondest memories are of their many travels. They wintered in TX and summered in CO for several years. They also drove their 5th Wheel to Alaska and all over that state. While there, Richard was known to wash his truck at 11:00 p.m. (because of the white nights). They hosted at Watkins Mill State Park for several years, and then hosted at National Parks in CO. Their children grew up with many wonderful vacations, and to this day, they say vacations are what they enjoyed most about their childhood.
When asked for words of wisdom, Linda said, "Enjoy life while you can." Richard says the secret to having a long marriage is for him to always say, "Yes ma'am!" The two have enjoyed their life and continue to do so today!
