From Ask the Therapist...
Dear Dr. O. I feel like I'm in need of Psychotherapy but I have never seen a therapist before. The reason is; and this is a bit embarrassing but, I suffer from chronic Gastritis and I am prone to farting, sorry, I don't know how to describe this in medical terms, without warning. What can I do? I've become anxious and depressed and I need help. Do you do Tele-Therapy?
Signed: Flustered in Farmington
Dear Flustered,
Chronic Gastritis is much more common than you might know. If you're dealing with lots of Anxiety this only tends to add to the problem. Feeling bad about it adds to your Depression and fuels your Anxiety even more.
Unfortunately at this time my practice is limited to local geography, I don't do therapy via social media or phone or email. Don't let this stop you from seeking help in person with a practitioner close to you. Look up someone in your local phone book and schedule an appointment for an evaluation and follow up. Prior to going to your appointment consider taking an over the counter measure to help prevent any gas and try doing some deep breathing on your way to and while you wait for your session in the waiting room. Deep breathing will help you relax and take the edge off any anxiety you might be feeling prior to meeting with your therapist.
When you meet with your therapist give him/her a detailed explanation of your health condition, if you haven't already done so prior to scheduling your first appointment. You'll have an opportunity to share medical issues effectin you in your initial evaluation. Then employ these simple protocols.
If you feel the need to pass gas in session simply excuse yourself and go to the rest room. Take care of business and promptly return. If you need to excuse yourself again do so. Resist the temptation to pass gas in the therapy room. Unfortunately the therapist can not stop the clock while you need to step out but if you explain your condition prior to making your appointment the practitioner can schedule additional time to complete your eval.
Mental Health issues are often paired with physical health problems. Don't let an opportunity to get relief pass because of fear or embarrassment.
If you follow this advice you'll come out smelling like a rose. Make that call today.
Best wishes for good Mental/Physical Health.
