According to the &LymphomaSociety, about every three minutes, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma – the most common types of blood cancer. Blood cancer is caused by DNA mutations within blood cells. In most cases, this is linked to factors beyond our control, like age, ethnicity and family history. This Blood Cancer Awareness Month, we’re answering common questions by sharing the facts shown here.

As a part of HCA Healthcare, we give our patients healthier tomorrows through access to a connected oncology network, including nine accredited blood cancer treatment programs. Through these programs, over 1,000 acute leukemia patients receive treatment each year. For some blood cancers, the only potential cure is a blood and marrow transplant. The HCA Healthcare Sarah Cannon Transplant and Cellular Therapy Network is the nation's leading provider of these transplants, conducting over 1,500 annually. Cellular therapy is another potential treatment for those with blood cancer, and our network is also leading the way in this novel treatment.

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with blood cancer, we’re here to help. Find compassionate oncology care: https://bit.ly/3Vs85zx.

Labor Day weekend is a time for barbecues, pool parties and outdoor fun, but it also marks one of the busiest periods for emergency rooms. While many holiday mishaps can be treated at home some situations require immediate medical attention.

-Seek emergency care right away if you or a loved one experiences any of the following:
-Severe chest pain or difficulty breathing
-A head injury accompanied by confusion, vomiting or loss of consciousness
-Signs of heatstroke, such as a high fever, confusion or fainting
-Deep cuts or wounds that won’t stop bleeding
-Severe abdominal pain or persistent vomiting
-Sudden weakness, numbness or difficulty speaking (possible stroke)

If you’re unsure whether your condition requires a visit to the emergency room, our experienced, licensed nurses are available 24/7 to help guide you on the next steps for care. Call HCA Midwest Health’s Consult-A-Nurse® line at (844) 706-8773.

A patient receiving care at Centerpoint, was disappointed to miss this week’s Royals game due to her hospital stay. Sensing her disappointment, the 4th floor nursing team teamed up with Sous Chef Chris Camacho to bring the ballpark experience to her bedside. Chris freshly popped popcorn in the oven and served it in a ballpark-style container, a thoughtful touch that truly lifted her spirits. She was very appreciative of the kind gesture.

There’s a lot to celebrate in Chiefs Kingdom — both on and off the field. 🎉

Last week, the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce hosted the Chiefs’ Kickoff Luncheon, uniting the team and community in one spirited gathering. Head coach Andy Reid, quarterback Patrick Mahomes and newly engaged tight end Travis Kelce headlined the program, sharing insight and energy for the season ahead.

HCA Midwest Health colleagues joined the celebration, wearing red and gold to show their Chiefs pride. We were honored to recognize our top nursing professionals with a well-deserved seat at the table. These champions in scrubs are at the heart of our mission: delivering compassionate, high-quality care that strengthens the health of our entire community.

Centerpoint Medical Center’s senior leadership team recently had the chance to take part in Walk in Your World – an incredible opportunity to step into the shoes of our front-line staff and experience their day-to-day firsthand. The experience is all about creating space for open conversations, where staff can share their thoughts, ideas and honest feedback with leadership.

We were also thrilled to welcome HCA Midwest Health President Keith Zimmerman, who joined us for the experience to see how we are supporting our goal of providing a lasting impact on our patients and community.

Centerpoint Medical Center and Belton Regional Medical Center’s trauma teams recently visited Lee’s Summit School District to teach STOP THE BLEED to school health nurses and school health aids.

Sign up to learn STOP THE BLEED - https://www.hcamidwest.com/locations/centerpoint-medical-center/calendar/event-details/a0scw0000003dZVAAY

The STOP THE BLEED program is a nationwide initiative designed to teach individuals how to respond to life-threatening bleeding emergencies. It provides basic training on techniques such as applying pressure, using tourniquets, and packing wounds to control severe bleeding until professional medical help arrives. By empowering everyday people with these skills, the program aims to save lives in situations where immediate medical intervention might not be available.

Our trauma teams are proud to hold STOP THE BLEED training throughout the year to help equip individuals with the knowledge to help individuals in bleeding emergencies.

Our Colleague Network members recently showed up in a big way — volunteering at two back-to-school fairs in one week to support local families.

At the Police Athletic League fair, our volunteers supported sports physicals to help student-athletes get ready for the season. We also hosted a heart health table, providing free blood pressure checks and stroke awareness education at the KCP Social Services Department fair.

Through volunteering and extending care beyond the walls of our facilities, our colleagues are creating healthier tomorrows for everyone. Thank you to everyone who showed up to care for our community. 👏

UTIs in older adults aren’t always obvious — but they can be serious.

Symptoms like confusion, fatigue or discomfort may signal an underlying infection, especially in seniors. Left untreated, UTIs can lead to complications such as kidney infections or even sepsis.

Staying proactive is key. Good hygiene practices, such as proper wiping and frequent changes of undergarments, help reduce the risk of infection. Drinking plenty of water also supports urinary health by flushing bacteria from the system. If you're unsure whether you or a loved one may have a UTI, calling a nurse is a great first step.

Call HCA Midwest Healthcare's Consult-A-Nurse® line for free at 844-70-NURSE (844-706-8773) to speak with a licensed nurse 24/7.
