This Black History Month, we honor the life and legacy of the late Mr. Thornton, co-founder of Thornton Funeral Home P.A., the first Black-owned and operated funeral home in Charles County, Maryland. Alongside his beloved wife, he built more than a business. He built a legacy of service, excellence, and unwavering commitment to the community.

To Tanja, he was “Uncle Thornton,” a man whose hearty, genuine laugh could light up a room and make your heart smile. He was known for his memorable sayings: “If you’re early, you’re on time. If you’re on time, you’re late,” and “It’s hard, but it’s fair.” His words carried wisdom, humor, and expectation, always encouraging those around him to strive for more.

He was an entrepreneur at heart. From establishing Thornton Funeral Home to launching other ventures, his mindset was simple. If it could be built, he would find a way to build it. Even into his 90s, he was still discussing his next business idea. His work ethic was unmatched. Rain, sleet, or snow, if a family was ready, the service would proceed. Serving families was not just his profession; it was his calling.

Behind a sometimes tough exterior was a generous heart. He supported loved ones quietly and consistently by building homes, lending money, creating opportunities, and helping families in need.

He was a devoted family man who valued hard work, persistence, and faith in action. His legacy lives not only in the foundation he laid for this funeral home, but in the countless lives he impacted through dignity, service, and determination.

Thornton Funeral Home is honored to remember Catherine Wills. Shared by her loving daughter, Catherine is remembered for her humor, strength, and devotion to her family. She had a personality that could light up a room, laughing easily and keeping those around her smiling.

She was a proud grandmother who loved showing off around her grandkids and played an important role in helping raise them. Her daughter recalls how she was always there when she was needed most, a steady source of love and support.

Catherine enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, from yard sales and thrifting to visits to the Festival of Lights, Golden Corral, and Walmart. Above all, her words, “I love you, Jenelle,” remain a treasured reminder of the bond they shared.
