A reminder this Thanksgiving

ARFID isn’t “pickiness.”

It’s a real eating disorder that can make holiday meals feel overwhelming — new textures, smells, expectations, and social pressure.

If you’re supporting someone with ARFID today
• Offer options without commenting on their plate
• Avoid pushing new foods
• Focus on connection, not the menu

Enjoy each other!

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Everyone’s ARFID journey is different and different tools help different people! In this case we adjusted the rating scale due to the clients age and he enjoyed being able to express what he tolerated through drawing and coloring. For us clinicians it is our job to make it work for our client. Check out bridgethefoodgap.com for more ideas and info!

4 Things You Don’t Have to Explain to Anyone (ARFID Edition)

1. Your Plate:
Whether it’s all beige foods, all safe foods, or looks “different” from everyone else’s — it’s yours.

2. Your Portions:
You don’t owe anyone a bigger serving, a second helping, or an explanation.

3. Your Progress:
Progress with ARFID is slow, non-linear, and deeply personal. Tiny wins count, even if others don’t see them.

4. Your Sensory Needs:
Texture, smell, temperature, appearance — these are real, valid experiences. Not preferences.

Set your boundaries by saying:
“No food comments today, please.”
“My plate is my business.”
“Safe foods are staying on the menu.”
“No pressure. No pushing. Just connection.”
“Respect my boundaries = supporting my recovery.”

New Blog Post: ARFID & Thanksgiving

So when we think about Thanksgiving being just around the corner, followed quickly by Christmas, why don’t we think together, and on our own, about what the holidays mean to us, and how we feel about family time and food? Let’s also think about what we may need to do to prepare to make the most of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Halloween can be full of fun — and food! But if you’re living with ARFID, it might also bring a little extra pressure or anxiety around unfamiliar treats, parties, or foods.

Here’s your friendly reminder:
🍬 You don’t have to eat anything you’re not ready for.
🍬 You’re allowed to enjoy Halloween your way — dressing up, decorating, handing out candy, or just watching spooky movies.
🍬 Safe foods are still safe today (and always).

Wishing you a day full of comfort, laughter, and maybe even a piece of candy or two that feels just right.

New Blog Post: Autumn with ARFID

Autumn can bring cozy meals, new flavors, and social gatherings — which can all feel overwhelming when you’re living with ARFID.

Remember: it’s okay if your version of “fall food” looks different.

As the weather changes, so do the foods, routines, and expectations around eating. Suddenly everything smells like pumpkin spice! Foods like soups, ciders, and apples start to replace summer foods.

If you live with ARFID, these seasonal shifts can be extra challenging — not because you’re doing anything wrong, but because change itself can feel overwhelming.

Here are a few gentle reminders as we head into fall:

🍁 You don’t have to like “fall foods”
🍁 You can explore new foods at your own pace
🍁 Comfort foods are still valid, even when they don’t “fit the season”

Small steps are still progress — maybe it’s trying a new version of a safe food, adding one new brand, or simply being open to the idea of trying.

Growth doesn’t have to happen all at once. Even fall takes its time to change.
