New Blog Post - ARFID Recovery: Becoming More Flexible

This blog explores one important recovery skill: increasing flexibility. Flexibility is what helps us move from that instant “no” to “maybe there’s another way.” Learning to adjust foods instead of rejecting them outright can make a world of difference in recovery.

After a lot of hard work, a client was able to stay the full week of his summer camp. His mother said this was the first year he was able to stay!

There is still a lot of work to do, but these wins show recovery is worth it!

"Choosing treatment goals is more important than we may think… but a lot harder than it looks."

When you’re in recovery — whether from ARFID or any eating disorder — it’s tempting to set vague or unrealistic goals like “I’ll just eat normally” or “I’ll stop being afraid of food.”

But the truth is…
💜Goals work best when they’re specific, achievable, and personal to you
💜They help guide each step so you’re not overwhelmed by the big picture
💜They give you something to celebrate along the way — because small wins are wins

Instead of a goal of “eat more foods,” try:

“Add one new fruit to my safe food list this month.”

“Bring one safe snack to a social event.”

If you’re not sure where to start, the Bridge the Food Gap workbook walks you through choosing treatment goals that are realistic, empowering, and tailored to your ARFID recovery journey.

Back to School with ARFID:

Going back to school can be exciting… but if you have ARFID, it can also bring extra challenges. New schedules, unfamiliar cafeterias, and social pressure around food can make mealtimes stressful.

Here are a few ideas to help:

💜Plan ahead — pack safe foods you know you can eat.
💜Give yourself permission to eat differently than others.
💜Create a backup plan for days when the cafeteria or snacks aren’t an option.
💜Practice self-compassion — your worth is not defined by what’s on your plate.
💜Reach out for support — friends, teachers, counselors, or your treatment team can help.

You or your loved one deserve to feel safe, supported, and nourished this school year. One meal, one snack, one small step at a time.

If you’re looking for tools and strategies, check out Bridge the Food Gap for practical ARFID recovery support.

Summer brings a change in routine—and with it, new challenges for individuals navigating ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder). From cookouts and family trips to overnight camps and disrupted meal schedules, the season often introduces unfamiliar foods, social eating situations, and changes to reliable support systems.

One bite... Not a whole plate. Not a full serving … one bite.

When you’re working through ARFID, trying new foods can feel overwhelming, even impossible. So let’s shrink the goal.

🎯 This week’s challenge:

Choose one food that feels a little bit possible (not terrifying, not disgusting—just maybe do-able), and take one bite.

That bite might be:

- A new shape of a safe food

- One noodle with sauce nearby (but not on it!)

- A food you used to like but haven’t touched in a while

Need help deciding what to try?

Check out our latest blog on how to choose a new food that feels safe enough to try (https://www.bridgethefoodgap.com/blog).

Remind yourself: Progress is one bite at a time.

ARFID Recovery: How Do You Know What to Try When You're Afraid of Food?

Navigating ARFID recovery can feel overwhelming—especially when just the idea of trying a new food sparks anxiety or fear. One of our clients recently asked, “Can you just tell me what your other ARFID people eat so I know what to try?” That simple but powerful question inspired our latest blog post.

Asking or accepting help is NOT a weakness.

In fact, for many people recovering from ARFID, this is the strongest thing they’ll ever do.

“I recognize I need to accept help” isn’t giving up. It’s giving in to growth, connection, and the possibility that healing doesn’t have to be done alone.

Support might look like:
💜 Talking to a therapist, dietitian, or your doctor
💜 Opening up to family and/or friends
💜 Joining a community that gets it

You don’t have to prove you’re strong by struggling in silence.

There is help and you are worthy of receiving it!

Recovery Real Talk

"I realized I actually needed to do the work."

This moment can be hard for some to recognize. The work has to come from the person wanting to recover, otherwise it is just bandaid until that light bulb goes off. Recovery will be messy, uncomfortable, hard, and often can be a slow process but the work is worth it.

And you do not have to do it alone.

For those recovering from ARFID, “doing the work” doesn’t look like a quick fix. It can mean:

💜showing up to meals even when the anxiety is loud
💜being honest about fear foods and sensory limits
💜tracking wins and setbacks without judgment
💜utilizing support when needed
