You are invited to join us to learn from Cat Meyer and Maree' Mickens from the Indiana Department of Health at our next coalition meeting on Thursday, October 17, 12-1:30pm ET. Cat and Maree' will present about the Maternal Health Innovation initiative.

The Maternal Health Innovation (MHI) initiative, funded by a grant awarded to the Indiana Department of Health by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) in 2022, is a testament to the state's commitment to improving maternal health outcomes. With a project duration of five years, the initiative aims to address two crucial areas - maternal mental health and postpartum care. The past two years, MHI has worked to reduce the bias that often exists within the healthcare system and create unique strategies to address the difficult barriers many new mothers face. The MHI initiative has laid the foundation for transforming the maternal healthcare landscape across the state and has been a resounding success in Indiana. (meeting link in the comments)

Welcome earth-side, Mia Jayne! On June 3, 2022 at 9:37 PM, this beautiful baby girl graced us with her presence.

Sarah left me in awe of her strength and resilience. Bryan was the ultimate support person encouraging and her affirming her, literally, until the moment Mia was born. What an incredibly beautiful birth!

Mama and baby are healthy and bonding beautifully.

Welcome earth-side, Aaliyah! On May 20, 2022 at 9:36 AM, this beautiful baby girl met her Mommy and Daddy for the first.

Mama did an amazing job using all of the laboring techniques we practiced. She truly birthed her way and, man, was it a beautiful experience. ✨

Mom and baby are healthy and bonding beautifully!

‘Hi, I’m Zuri Davidson. I am a Birth and Postpartum Doula, and Certified Lactation Support Counselor. Inspired by my own transformative birthing experience, I founded uMa Birth Village in 2021 to provide compassionate and holistic doula support to birthing people and families. I live in Avon with my wonderful husband and our amazing little three year old son.

I am honored to serve as the Board Secretary for IBC. I am so passionate about our mission because I have seen the havoc our healthcare system has wrecked on birthing people and families. While education and advocacy are powerful measures, I believe that giving a birthing person access to give birth where they feel safe, seen and heard is a key component. This means that every birthing person should have access to education, doula support and quality midwifery care. Together, we can make the changes that we want to see to ensure that birthing people experience positive birth outcomes and receive quality care through the first year postpartum.

I am very excited to be working along side some amazing women and a powerful community!’

✨ MEET YOUR TEAM ✨

‘Hello! I’m Cassandra, the President of the Indiana Birth Coalition. I’m a home birth mama x2, Certified Birth Doula, Student Midwife, and passionate advocate for families! Before coming to birth work, I supported parents with their child(ren)’s development as an Infant and Toddler Teacher for several Early Childhood Education centers around Indy, and ran a naturally-minded and child-led in-home program from 2016-2021. I have served as a Certified Babywearing Educator for a local nonprofit organization, teaching and providing hands-on support to new parents interested in learning the benefits of wearing their babies. During and between my own nursing journeys that totaled 5.5 years, I participated and volunteered time at a breastfeeding support group, where I received so much valuable information and guidance that has not only helped me, but that I have since passed on to other parents! Mothers and fathers feeling confident and empowered in the experiences that surround growing their family is such a huge passion for me - everyone deserves support and knowledge that allows them to be the best version of themselves.

I started the coalition for many reasons - above all being that I believe birth belongs in our communities and women deserve to be at the center of their experience. I believe that we need serious change to reduce the fear and trauma that goes in and comes out of the current options for pregnancy and birthing experiences; fear that we carry into parenthood and trauma that stays with us forever. This is why the mission of the IBC is so important to me! My role as President is to bring people together and keep us on track to meet our goals, so you’ll likely be seeing/hearing a lot from me. 😜

When I’m not at a birth, meeting with clients, or teaching a class, I’m listening to music with my family, exploring nature with my girls, or laughing with friends. Building a sense of community is at the heart of everything I do, and I’m so happy you’re all here with us! 🫶🏼’
