Due to a sustained injury, I will be out of the office for a few weeks...
Dearest Clients,
A few of you learned on Sunday that I dislocated my shoulder on Saturday. I messaged most of you who had scheduled appointments with me for this week to let you know that I will not be able to fulfill those. I followed up with my Dr this morning and he has told me that I will be out for at least two weeks until our next follow up appt.
Unfortunately for me, this is not a new situation, however this was by far the worst one to date. I am hyper-mobile and have a history of joint dislocations. Normally most of my joints only partially dislocate and therefore easily and nearly unnoticeably (to me) go right back into place.
About 22 years ago I sustained a severe injury to my right shoulder, a complete dislocation, that set me up for years of instability with this particular joint and have now dislocated it ~18 times. This one was by far the worst because normally with some manipulation on my part taught to me by PT's in the past I am able to get it to go back in on my own. Well this time I was unsuccessful in doing so and the pain that ensued was excruciating. Every time I went to move my arm to try to position it back into place a burning sensation shot from my neck down through my arm leading me to believe that a nerve was being pinched somewhere between the head of my humerus and scapula. So as not to incur any serious damage I called 911. And here we are!
As you can imagine with an injury like this the joint capsule is very tender and sore and putting weight on it is out of the question. The surrounding supporting muscles are weak, overstretched, and in a state of off and on spasm. In the past it's been about 3 weeks before I could really return to work in a limited capacity, so for the time being I will be canceling all appointments until at least after my next Dr visit on the 21st. At this time he and I will likely be discussing the very thing I was trying so hard to avoid: surgery. But with a joint that will inevitably dislocate again, I have probably arrived at the stage at which there are no other options. (No surgeries are scheduled at this time, but I will keep you all posted as to when that will happen for at that time I will be taking an extended break from massaging).
After my next Dr visit I will ask him what he thinks about me doing Body Talk sessions with my clients, and if he gives me the green light on that then I will be offering ONLY Body Talk. Many of you are already somewhat familiar with what Body Talk is because I've been studying it for the past few years. It has become an integral part of who I am as a person and as a therapist. Please visit my webpage for more in-depth information on what this is, and please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you may have.
In my years of practicing I have come to understand the intimate workings of the body-mind-spirit connection, and until we uncover the root cause of the pain that surfaces in the physical body we continue to experience physical symptoms. I believe 100% that Body Talk helps to reveal these root causes. I believe this is where my practice is heading and that these continued repeat dislocations are only messages from my body that I am not in total alignment within myself.
My sincerest apologies for having to cancel the appointments scheduled for the month of September. Working with you all brings me so much joy and so it is quite uncomfortable to have to go through this "dislocation" in my life. I thank you all so much for your continued loyalty and support. I appreciate each and everyone of you in more ways than you can know.
Again, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions and/or concerns you might have! I will keep you updated going forward as to when I will be able to return in a full capacity.
My deepest gratitude,
Christina Cooper
