If I am being honest, life is really tough right now. The inspiration behind what I do here has been limited. I’m finding my creativity coming to life through sharing more of my story than my job.

I love being an SLP, but that’s not my sole identity. I’m a friend, sister, daughter, auntie, dog mom, and more. And these last two months, I’ve only had the capacity to be those.. My clients have brought so much joy to my everyday. I am grateful beyond measure🫶🏻

I hope the inspiration returns sooner rather than later. I have so much to share. So many videos. So many stories. So much knowledge that I have gained from my neurodivergent kids.

But for now, my focus is to be present with my clients, friends, family and faith✝️

I hope you stick around for the journey, because a better version of me is coming soon🫶🏻

More often than not when parents reach out to me about services, it’s because they have
reached a plateau with their child’s AAC device.

There are so many factors that go into a user’s
experience, but one of my first questions is “Has the device been personalized outside of basic
“About Me” information?” The answer is almost always “no” or “I don’t know.”

I don’t write this to put blame on SLPs! Kids are receiving devices from various settings with
people who aren’t adequately trained in AAC. School-based SLPs are not able to include device editing or parent training as service provider minutes (even though it should be).

There is a lot going against these users from the jump, but with more resources, we can change that!

My goal for parents is to understand how and why of device programming so that they feel
confident in making changes. Yes, I am being transparent with parents and saying “please
check with me before you make edits so I can confirm or give feedback.”

They love the collaboration.

They appreciate the effort being put in to help their child feel heard and seen.

It never gets old when their child grins from ear to ear talking about the things they love.

Halloween is coming up.. Let’s get started!

The old way taught me to manage behaviors and push compliance. But over the years, I have learned that when we focus on connection, regulation, and autonomy…communication naturally happens🫶🏻

At the Child-Led Summit hosted by the inspiring , you’ll learn how to confidently step away from compliance-based models, without guilt and fear.

I remember spending so much time thinking about the goals I wanted to write for students and feeling stuck in my SMART goal formula… When I started my private practice, I kept my usual goals that I had been writing within my IEPs and adjusting them slightly for an at-home model..

Two years ago, my private caseload grew to serve mostly neurdivergent kids and after in-depth conversations with parents, it was clear these goals weren’t working..

Although I was still writing SMART goals, I was not focusing on the child and what they CAN do in the moment.. I was looking at the outcome. Making this shift in my goal writing has helped my families in their engagement in too.

Strength-based goals— are we confident in writing them? Could we use more examples of what these look like? Comment YES below if you want to see more🙌🏼

Let’s talk about Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) and why we shouldn’t put an autistic 5 year old who is minimally speaking in a separate program👏🏼

Too often, decisions are being made based on what a district can provide—not what’s actually best for the child. There are many factors that go into making the decision for a child’s LRE, but what we are not going to do is move a child to a different placement because of pre-determined programming, staffing challenges, or funding.

When kids spend less time with their neurotypical peers, they miss out on essential opportunities to build communication, social connections, and shared learning experiences. We know that autistic children learn through lived experience.

Every parent’s voice matters. If your gut is telling you your child can thrive with more inclusion, advocate for it. Because inclusion isn’t a privilege—it’s a right. If we see progress in natural environments, but not in developmental preschool, does it really makes sense to place a child in a more restricted environment? I personally don’t think so.. I also understand when programming changes are necessary, but that’s a different conversation.

If you suspect a child is a Gestalt Language Processor (GLP), you might be wondering: now what?! 🤔

There’s no one-size-fits-all roadmap, but here are some key starting points I always focus on:

✨ Prioritize their gestalts – Use their scripts and phrases consistently across different activities to help them connect meaning.

✨ Educate parents – Explain that there are two types of natural language processing: Analytic and Gestalt. Most parents have already noticed patterns in their child’s speech—they just need the framework to understand it!

✨ Set meaningful goals – If needed, collaborate with parents to develop individualized goals that support their child’s natural language development journey.

By meeting a GLP where they are and honoring their way of learning, we can help them move toward self-generated, flexible language! 💬💙

Have you worked with GLPs before?
