The connection between a mother’s diet and the taste of breast milk is truly amazing. Recent studies highlight the direct impact of maternal food choices on the flavor profile of breast milk. A diverse array of foods introduces infants to various tastes, potentially influencing their future food preferences. This culinary journey begins during pregnancy, where the amniotic fluid carries flavors from the mother’s meals. Once born, breastfeeding continues this sensory exploration, exposing babies to the nuances of different foods consumed by their mothers. It’s a testament to the intricate ways in which nature weaves connections, nurturing not only the physical health but also the taste experiences of our little ones.

There are lots of reasons why a family may choose combo feeding:

🍼 Low milk supply caused by insufficient glandular tissue (IGT), surgeries, or breast augmentation
🍼 Perceived low milk supply
🍼 The desire to not be the parent that feeds all the time
🍼To meet personal feeding goals…

Whatever the reason you have for adding formula to your feeding plan, just know that breast milk, in even small quantities, is beneficial to mom and baby! And if you want to use your breast milk by direct feeding, or pumping to bottles, find yourself a knowledgeable lactation consultant that can help you make a plan that works for you and your family!

🥛A few weeks ago one of my clients told me that she had to drink cow’s milk to make breast milk. When I asked why, she said it was because milk makes milk. This is not true. You are not a milk dispenser that you pour milk into and milk comes out. Your body has a complicated network of hormones, milk-making and storage cells, and ducts that take proteins, fats, and sugars from your body to make the exact recipe of breast milk that your baby needs.

🐄 Cow’s milk can provide you with calcium, an important mineral for your health. But you can also find high levels of calcium in other dairy products like cheese and yogurt, broccoli, leafy greens, dates, and cashews.

💧 Staying hydrated is important too. A hormone released during milk production, called oxytocin, can make mom feel dehydrated. It’s important to consume enough fluids, and drink when you are thirsty.

👶🏽 Babies are unique little individuals, each with their own hunger rhythms and growth spurts. Trying to stick to a rigid schedule might lead to stress for both you and your baby. 😓

💕 Here’s why a flexible approach is fantastic:

🌸 Babies signal when they are hungry: rooting, sucking on their hands, and crying are signs they are ready for a meal.

🌸 Growth spurts happen. Babies might want to feed more often during growth spurts to support their development. It’s totally normal. 📈

🌸 comfort and bonding: feeding is not just about nourishment. It’s a beautiful bonding experience that provides comfort and security. 🤗

Remember, every baby is unique, and their needs can vary day to day. So, let’s embrace the beauty of flexibility, cherish those bonding moments, and support our little ones as they grow. 🌱 ❤️

I dropped my Grow Baby supplies bag by my front door after my last consult this week, and my doll flopped out of the bag like this. Same, girl. Same. 😆

This has been an exhausting week….first full week of school, my husband traveling for work, lots of driving for Grow Baby consultations, juggling the kids’ schedules/friends/extra curricular activities, so much behind-the-scenes planning for marketing and upcoming community events, plus my hospital job…. This girl is TIRED!

I’m looking forward to a day of rest and recharging with friends tomorrow, and then I’m right back at it on Monday. I love getting to help all of the new families I meet through Grow Baby Lactation and the hospital. They are absolute rockstars🌟and the love of getting to help them on their breastfeeding journeys is what keeps me going!
