When setting goals for a new challenge, it can seem deflating when you don’t hit all your goals right out of the gate. But that cannot be further from the truth. Thinking about the week prior…did you hit any of those goals? No, no you didn’t! So, you were better this week by hitting 1 of your goals than you were the previous week, so how can that be failure? I’ll give you a hint….IT ISN’T!!!! So, when you are feeling down for not accomplishing everything you wanted, just look back at your history and ask if you’re better today than you were then. As long as the answer is “yes,” that is all that matters!

I had a great time today presenting to 50 people on nutrition for heart health. I love educating, and I love being able to interact directly with people! Can't wait for the next one!

February is heart health awareness month, and as 30% of all deaths worldwide are cardiovascular disease, it is extremely important. The other cool thing about it is that nutrition is the best way to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease!

Most people ride the motivation wave high in January. At the end of the year, your health, fitness, and nutrition is not where you want it to be (or a total train wreck), and after all of the holiday parties with tons of food, drinks and activities, you’re ready to conquer your goals of losing weight, eating better, becoming more fit, or just becoming healthier!

However, change is HARD! Motivation is FANTASTIC to help you start making change, but it’s TERRIBLE for helping you make that change a permanent part of your life. That’s why when I work with clients who are trying to make LONG-TERM changes, we do it in a systematic way that ensures the changes help you achieve your goals as well as become part of your daily habits.

If you’re struggling with these new changes that you wanted to make, reach out to me, and let’s have a chat on how I could help you to achieve your goals and make these changes for LIFE!

This post is just discussing diets and helping to lose weight. The health aspects of the diets will be discussed at a later time. All diets can work to help you lose weight. They do this by helping you enter into a caloric deficit (i.e., burning more calories than you eat)., which is THE ONLY WAY to lose weight over a long time period. However, some of these diets can make people eat MORE than usual, and that’s where it either takes lots of time for you to figure it out on your own, or you can work with a professional like myself who can gather the right information to help you select the best diet for you (which may not even be an “official/named” diet).

Keto diet – This has been a very popular diet for a long time now. The way that it gets you into a caloric deficit is by eliminating carbohydrates. Certain people tend to overeat on carbohydrate rich foods, so by eliminating them, it helps you to lose weight as you will eat fewer calories. Also, certain people feel fuller by eating meals that are higher in fat, which also helps with eating fewer calories.

Intermittent Fasting (IF) – IF has also been around for a while, but the certain type of IF that I’ll be discussing is better called “Time-Restricted Eating” (TRE). This is where you eat for a certain number of hours during the day and don’t eat for the rest of the day. A typical pattern is 8:16, which means that you eat for 8 hours of the day (usually starting around lunch time through dinner time) with the remaining time not eating (so, eating window of 12PM to 8PM). Again, as you are only eating during 8 hours, many people tend to naturally eat less than they would if they were eating for 12 hours of the day. HOWEVER, this can backfire on many people because they are so hungry by the time that they are “allowed” to eat, that they eat much more than they would if they would have eaten earlier in the day because they are so hungry.

Carnivore – This is a relatively new comer to the dieting world, and although it hasn’t hit the “mainstream”, it is still fairly popular. This is a diet where you only eat meat and other animal products like eggs and cheese. Obviously, you are taking out a LARGE number of food groups, and as protein is the most satiating macronutrient (i.e., keeps you fuller longer), people tend to eat fewer calories. I know I said that this wasn’t going to be about health, but please don’t do this. Any diet that restricts all fruits and vegetables should not be followed.

Vegan/Vegetarian – There are many different flavors of vegetarianism, but for the most part, these diets are highly concentrated around plant products. These products tend to have a higher fiber count and lower calories per ounce of food, so these can help people to eat fewer calories.

There are many other options besides these as well, but these are some of the more popular dieting plans that you hear about with helping for weight loss. You may have heard someone on TV or someone you know that lost a ton of weight using one of the above, so you tried it, and you didn’t lose any weight. That’s not necessarily your fault; it just may not have been the right diet plan for you. If you have had issues trying to lose weight and not sure what may be right for you, please reach out, and we can work together to come up with the right plan for YOU!

You will hear people say that your body stops burning fat when you drink alcohol, so you can’t drink alcohol if you want to lose weight. However, this is NOT true. I proved this wrong while being an actively drinking alcoholic and getting my body weight down to 175! While my weight was low, I was not healthy. Given that, I don’t recommend the “only consuming alcohol route for losing weight“😊, but this does prove that you can drink alcohol and lose weight. With that being said, cutting back on your alcohol intake can be a really good approach for helping you on your fat loss journey, but it is not necessary to completely give it up (although if you wish to do that, that’s completely fine too).

Given that today is New Year’s Eve, if you wish to drink alcohol, enjoy yourself, but please be safe!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!!

I don’t know who needs to hear it (I know I am one of them), but remember what today is all about. Giving thanks and making memories with those we love!

I don’t care how much you eat or how little you move today, it will make ZERO difference on your long-term fitness/weight loss/health journey. Yes, I mean that even if you eat an entire pie! (You might laugh, but that is not out of the realm of possibility for me…I mean, I’m just saying, people shouldn’t wait too long to get dessert! Haha).

But I hope you have a great Thanksgiving and no matter what happens today, you don’t need to starve yourself or do 3 hours of cardio to “make up” for what you ate or how inactive you were on Thanksgiving. Just go back to your normal routine, and everything will be great!

When I presented my exercise plan to a new client, she responded by saying “That’s it?” I had created a plan for her that required 30 minutes, 3 days per week, and she was shocked because she thought it was going to require her to be in the gym 75 minutes, 4-5 days per week. However, that would not have worked for her schedule long-term as she works full-time, has multiple children, and volunteers for her children’s activities. That would not have been a sustainable plan for her, and she would have burned out within the first month or two. Does that sound like something you have been through? If so, fill out an intake form (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1HwuN3GErxRsGk_WtC1ejGMG2wNyxUv0T41mY93KLI8k), and let’s have a discussion on creating a plan that will not only work with your schedule, but will also help you achieve your goals!!
