New or expectant moms can get one free visit through CVS' MinuteClinic or free online support with a licensed therapist.

It's part of a new program that started this month, in partnership with the Postpartum Support International Help Line.

All of our clinicians have been trained in treating postpartum depression and anxiety, and it's something we put a lot of effort into and we want to connect with as many new moms as possible to offer support in this area.

The psychological consequences of a miscarriage are often lasting and profound. This study brings to light what I think many of us know to be true.

The aftermath of a miscarriage is something that needs to be acknowledged and taken seriously by our medical system.

Support should be available. Qualified counseling should be offered. No one should have to suffer in silence.

Sending love to everyone currently processing or grieving a loss. You are not alone. 🧡

PSI is here to help, you do not have to go through this alone.

🤱 THE PERFECT LATCH 🤱
The latch is so important because it is THE point of contact where the breast milk transfers from you to your baby.

If you’re not latched right, your ni***es can become very sore, and that kind of soreness can definitely lead to giving up early!

❤️ It’s not normal to feel pain while breastfeeding
❤️ While you may feel some discomfort when they initially start, once the ni**le is in the right position far back in the baby’s mouth, there should be no pain
❤️ When the baby is nursing correctly, the tip of your ni**le is way back in the baby’s mouth

Tips to achieve the perfect latch:
💜 Aim their nose, not their mouth, at your ni**le
💜 Latch the baby on with their lower jaw first
💜 Make sure your baby’s head is tilted back so their eyes are looking at your elbow or your armpit
💜 After your baby is latched properly, their lips should also be flanged out like a fish and not tucked in
💜 In order to get the deep latch that is needed, you’ll need to pull your baby close to your body
💜 You should never have to press on your breast for your baby to breathe while nursing, no matter how large your breasts are

After your baby is properly latched and you have triggered the milk to let down, you will start to see your baby sucking and swallowing by watching the baby’s jaw and listening for the swallowing sound.

Some facts about nuchal cords:

🔆 Nuchal cords are incredibly common, occurring in an estimated 1 of 3 births.

🔆 They are very rarely dangerous.

🔆 Fetuses receive oxygen through the umbilical cord, not by breathing through the mouth or nose, so a cord around the neck is not cutting off their air like it would for you or me. If the cord is left in tact, the baby can still be receiving oxygen from the placenta for several minutes after birth.

🔆 Most babies with a nuchal cord have one that is very loose and it can be simply slipped over the head after birth. There is usually no indication of the nuchal cord at all.

🔆 The main way for a nuchal cord to be harmful (if the cord is healthy) is if it is wrapped multiple times and is so tight that it compresses itself, thereby decreasing blood flow inside, or if there is a true knot so tight that it does the same (rare). The cord would have to be extremely tight to cut off blood flow between the body and brain.

🔆 Nuchal cord is very difficult to identify before birth, even with ultrasound.

🔆 You do not need to have a c-section solely due to a suspected nuchal cord.

🔆 Medications given during a birth induction/augmentation can cause erratic & extra strong contractions, causing heart decelerations in the fetus. If a c-section is performed and a nuchal cord is discovered, it is frequently blamed (though the cause was more likely the induction meds). This can lead the mother to feel her baby was "saved" by the hospital staff, when they may have actually been the ones to CAUSE the issues the baby was "saved" from.

🔆 A healthy umbilical cord is filled with a gelatinous substance called Wharton's Jelly that protects the cord vessels as a fetus twists and turns its way inside the uterus.

💟💟 BREASTFEEDING FACT 💟💟

You should continue breastfeeding your baby when you are sick.

Although you may be getting advice to discontinue breastfeeding because you are under the weather, have a virus, or are taking medication…

this is one of those times that it is MOST important for you to CONTINUE to breastfeed!

When you are sick, your body is making antibodies for the exact pathogen that you are fighting and transferring that directly to your baby through your breast milk.

That will help your baby fight the virus that you are carrying and help them to stay healthy while you are in contact with them!

Discontinuing breastfeeding at this critical time will actually INCREASE your child’s risk of contracting the illness and leave them way more defenseless against fighting it off since infants immune systems are immature and he or she is relying on your antibodies coming through your milk.

❤ BREASTFEEDING FACT ❤
Your body/breasts can detect if your baby is ill and adapt to provide your baby with the antibodies they need to get better...

Research that suggests that when your baby nurses at the breast, their saliva may actually be transferred backwards into the ni**le. This allows your body to begin the process of creating breast milk that is specifically attacking the virus or bacteria that is making your baby ill.

This is one of the reasons why breastfed babies tend to have fewer infections, and when they do get sick, they recover more quickly.

Your milk is WAY MORE than just food for your baby. Your milk is actually the perfect MEDICINE.

Not only is it made specifically for your baby, but also for exactly what is making them sick.

These changes that occur in breast milk to accommodate your babies needs, can sometimes be seen when the milk is pumped. It may appear as a different color than usual, although this is NOT always visible. You do not need to worry if you cannot detect the change, just trust that your body knows exactly what to do to take care of your little one.

This is something important for exclusively pumping moms to keep in mind. While your breast milk will respond to the detection of a virus or foreign bacteria in your environment, you may not be receiving the “communication” of the baby’s saliva drawing up into the ni**le as with nursing.

My best advice for all breastfeeding moms, nursing at the breast or exclusively pumping is to find ways to be as close to your baby as possible.

Even being drooled on (among other things) will help this transfer to take place and kick start your body to begin the process of creating the special “medicine” that your baby needs and can only get from you. ❤
