Brain injury survivors and their caregivers often face major challenges adjusting to daily life after injury. Research shows that strong self-efficacy, or confidence in managing those challenges, can improve treatment outcomes.

To better understand these needs, the Brain Injury Self-Efficacy Scale (BICS), which originated from a research study at Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana, was created to measure coping confidence in both survivors and caregivers, including confidence in managing challenges unique to brain injury, such as explaining the injury to others and adapting to daily life.

While BICS has expanded understanding of self-efficacy in this population, continued research will help validate the scale for broader use.

Dr. Backhaus discusses research, BICS (Brain Injury Coping Skills), and Couple’s CARE at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana and how these programs impact patients’ lives.
