Building Skills, One Cube at a Time! ✨🌳

In OT, Ivy worked on fine motor skills, visual motor integration, and hand strengthening by recreating pictures using linking cubes. Activities like this support coordination, problem-solving, and motor planning — all while keeping it fun and engaging! 💪🧠 Does your kiddo enjoy building?

“The Very Hungry Caterpillar” Food Exploration 🍎🍐

Our creative occupational therapist paired a beloved book with hands-on food exploration! As they read The Very Hungry Caterpillar, they paused every few foods to try out the real thing — cutting, tasting, and even “feeding” our caterpillar friend 🐛.

The focus was on:
🍽️ Expanding food variety — especially fruits, starches, and mixed foods
🧠 Practicing direction following
🥄 Encouraging playful, low-pressure feeding experiences

A fun and interactive way to bring the story to life while supporting feeding goals! 🌿📚 Can you recreate this at home?

🗣️ Halloween can be tricky for children with language delays or who use alternative ways to communicate — but with a little preparation, it can still be a fun and confidence-building night! Here are 5 tips to help make trick-or-treating successful for every communicator: 🎃🍬

1️⃣ Practice ahead of time – Role-play trick-or-treating at home! Practice knocking, holding out the bucket, and using an AAC button or phrase like “trick or treat” and “thank you.”

2️⃣ Use AAC or visuals – Bring their AAC device, a “trick or treat” card, or a wearable tag that lets others know “I use gestures or a device to talk.” It helps promote understanding and inclusion!

3️⃣ Keep scripts short and simple – Practice easy phrases like “hi,” “thank you,” or “more candy please.” Even a smile or wave counts — all communication is meaningful!

4️⃣ Go at your child’s pace – Skip loud houses, take breaks, and choose quieter times to go out. Less pressure = more fun and confidence.

5️⃣ Celebrate every success – Whether they used a word, gesture, or device, cheer them on! Every little win builds confidence and communication skills. 🎉

Let’s make Halloween fun and inclusive for ALL communicators! 🧡

🎃 Halloween can be overwhelming for children with sensory sensitivities — but with a little planning, it can still be fun for everyone! Here are 5 tips to make the holiday more enjoyable:

1️⃣ Prepare Ahead
Talk about the day, read a Halloween-themed book, or role-play what to expect.

2️⃣ Choose Comfortable Costumes
Let your child wear soft clothes or PJs under their costume — or skip the costume and decorate a wagon instead!

3️⃣ Pick a Calm Environment
Trick-or-treat early on quiet streets. Avoid homes with flashing lights or loud, scary decorations.

4️⃣ Practice Makes Progress
Rehearse saying "trick-or-treat" and "thank you." Visit familiar homes, and use AAC or other communication tools if needed.

5️⃣ Create New Traditions
Not every Halloween needs candy and costumes — try pumpkin painting, baking, or a movie night instead.

🎧 Bonus Tip: Don’t forget to bring noise-canceling headphones, a comfort item, or a favorite fidget toy — these can help your child stay regulated and feel secure throughout the festivities.

✨ A sensory-friendly Halloween is a successful one!

Meet Our Social Media Team!
Say hello to Jessica and Kellie — the creative duo behind CTC’s social media! 🙌✨

Each week, they work together to plan, design, and share meaningful content that highlights the incredible work happening at CTC. From educational posts and clinic updates to fun behind-the-scenes moments, Jessica and Kellie make sure our community stays connected and informed. 📱💬

You can find their work on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, where they bring our mission to life online.

Jessica, an Occupational Therapist at CTC, joined the social media team in March 2021. Jessica has played a key role in shaping CTC’s online presence over the years and loves finding creative ways to share resources, celebrate milestones, and highlight the amazing work of our staff and families.

Kellie, a Speech-Language Pathologist, became part of the team this fall and brings fresh ideas and energy to our platforms. She’s excited to help grow our online community and showcase all the ways CTC supports children and families.

Be sure to say hi to Jessica and Kellie when you see them in the clinic or out in the community through First Steps! 👋 (You can also give them a shoutout on this post!)
