Recently Millie the Amazon parrot came to visit after making a daring escape from her home and going on an adventure in the outside world.
When her owner was able to get her back to safety, he noticed that she was holding her right wing differently and had a small amount of blood on her coelom.
Based on physical exam, Millie's doctor recommended radiographs to determine the extent of her injuries. Unfortunately, in addition to a wing fracture we also found a BB pellet, Millie had been shot.
Luckily for Millie, the BB pellet was in soft tissue only and did not hit any important structures.
Her owner elected to pursue surgery to repair the wing with an IM pin and remove the BB.
Millie did fantastic and her surgery was successful! She is now seeing us weekly to recheck the fracture with some added physical therapy. Her doctors are hopeful that Millie will continue to have a good recovery and regain full flight!
AEAC sees many gun shot wounds, particularly in our native wildlife birds. We urge the public to please be mindful when out shooting and, this should go without saying, refrain from shooting at animals. Thankfully, Millie's story ends in success but many gunshot wounds that we see do not.

Hazel the hedgehog came to visit us recently for her first wellness visit! At just 6 months old, Hazel was a star for her exam!
Hedgehogs can be difficult to examine with their quills and ability to ball up to hide their face and limbs. But Hazel was very brave and let us do a full physical exam, of course she got a mealworm treat at the end for her bravery!
We love doing new pet wellness exams and helping owners give their new family members the best care!

Have you ever wondered how X-rays of fish are taken? 🐟
Here is your behind the scenes view! Our nurse, Katelyn, carefully moved our aquatic friend into a smaller container with water from their own tank to be able to take an image from the top of the fish to view the abdomen. To achieve diagnostic images of fish, or other aquatic species, from the side (or lateral views), we can gently place them in a ziploc bag. We ensure they have enough space to not be squished but not enough space they can turn around, always making sure we have sufficient enough water to fully submerge the pet.
Radiographs in fish can be valuable in finding foreign bodies, swim bladder abnormalities, masses, etc. We are fortunate to be able to provide this service to our fish owners!

Our last and final IHRS spotlight rabbit for National Adopt a Rescue Rabbit month, Coco!🐰
Remember when we mentioned that rabbits all have their own unique personalities? Well, Coco is full of personality! She was found outside but that doesn't stop her from loving people and wanting to be snuggled. She takes great pride in her playhouse, which includes a custom built (by herself) cardboard playhouse. Which means this energetic girl thrives in a home with plenty of space to run and explore!

Introducing Tabitha! This weeks IHRS spotlight rabbit for Adopt a Rescue Rabbit Month! 🐰 If you're thinking she looks familiar that is because we shared a photo of her sister, Sabrina, a couple weeks ago. These two sweet bunnies decided they wanted all of the attention for themselves and prefer to have their own space.

Tabitha's hairstyle may be wild and free but she is a sensitive girl at heart who is looking for someone patient and kind who will let her warm up on her own time. Once she does, her personality will shine!

🐰Meet this weeks Indiana House Rabbit adoptee, Mariska! 🐰
Why do rabbits make good pets? They are social, loving, and intelligent animals who each have their own personality! At IHRS, you can find many of these different personalities within their adoptable rabbits as they all come from various backgrounds.
Mariska has been on quite the journey in her life after she was released into the wild. Because of this, she enjoys quieter environments, her foster says she is the perfect work-from-home buddy! Even throughout all of her hardships, with patience and time, Mariska has so much love to give!
