Indiana Disability Rights

Indiana Disability Rights We are an agency that provides legal and other advocacy services to people with disabilities. Indiana Disability Rights was created in 1977 by state law (Ind.

Code 12-28-1-6, as amended) to protect and advocate the rights of people with disabilities and is Indiana's federally designated protection and advocacy system and client assistance program. It is an independent state agency, which receives no state funding and is independent from all service providers, as required by federal and state law. Indiana Disability Rights is governed by a 13-member commission, which sets the agency's priorities and is advised on mental illness matters by a 10-member advisory council. Indiana Disability Rights staff includes disability rights advocates and attorneys who have the authority to pursue appropriate legal and administrative remedies on behalf of people with disabilities, to ensure the enforcement of their constitutional and statutory rights. Indiana Disability Rights may be able to assist Hoosiers who have a disability and are being denied a right or are being discriminated against because of that disability. For additional information, please visit our website: http://www.indianadisabilityrights.org.

Indiana voters with disabilities can bring someone they trust to help them vote or request assistance from poll workers. If you need assistance, you can get help from:
👍A friend
👍A case manager, social worker, or therapist
👍A poll worker
👍Someone you trust
❌You cannot get help from your boss or union leader.
Ask for help before you go into the voting booth! Your helper must fill out a form at the polls.

Did your New Year's resolutions include getting your affairs in order? If so, IDR may have resources to help! Do you have an advanced directive? Advanced directives communicate when you can't. Advanced directives are a set of instructions you want your medical care team to follow if you are unable to make medical decisions. For example, you can tell your team the circumstances under which you would or would not want to receive ventilation support. IDR has free plain language advanced directive resources and printable templates you can download at https://www.in.gov/idr/advanced-directive-resources/. Hopefully this resolution is one that you can soon check off your to-do list!

We didn't want to miss the opportunity to recognize that March is dedicated to increasing awareness of the 25% of adults and children with disabilities in our communities. If you have a disability, this month is a great time to communicate, connect, and collaborate with your neighbors. Some ways to celebrate disability awareness include
•Offer to be a guest speaker to talk about disability etiquette to local groups or businesses.
•Partner with an organization to inform them about inclusive hiring practices.
•Read a book or enjoy a podcast by a person with a disability.
How will you celebrate Disability Awareness Month while you've still got time in March?
