50th Anniversary CME Speaker Spotlight

As part of our 50th Anniversary CME program, join Jen Sullivan, MD, MPH, for "From Resuscitation to Regulation," a group discussion exploring how emergency physicians can shape health policy at local, state, and national levels. Drawing on her experience as a health system leader, policy maker, and practicing emergency physician, Dr. Sullivan will highlight how the stories we encounter at the bedside can influence care delivery and public policy. This session offers practical insight into leveraging clinical expertise to drive meaningful change while celebrating five decades of Emergency Medicine excellence. Registration link below.

In celebration of Resident Appreciation Week, the IUSM Emergency Medicine faculty wanted to do something special for our residents, so a call was put out to sponsor resident tickets to this year's Emergency Medicine gala on Friday, March 13 at Ash & Elm. The response was immediate, and overwhelming. More than 20 faculty members, including alumni and retirees, contributed to the fund, and in less than three hours -- on a weekday evening! -- the goal was reached.

That kind of response speaks volumes about how much pride the Department of Emergency Medicine takes in our residents -- not just for the clinical excellence you demonstrate every day, but for your leadership, advocacy, scholarship, teamwork, and the care you bring to our patients and community.

The IUSM Emergency Medicine Gala is a time to celebrate our shared work, our people, and our future. This year, it's also a tangible reminder that this community shows up for one another.

If you're a current Emergency Medicine resident, please make sure you RSVP using the link found in an email you should have received (which will also be included in this week's Around EM). We hope to see all of you there to enjoy the evening, and allow yourselves to be celebrated! And to those faculty who contributed to make this happen, we thank you.

Today, February 27, is Thank a Resident Day, the final day of 2026's Resident Appreciation Week. Thank a Resident Day is a special day created by The Arnold P. Gold Foundation’s Gold Humanism Honor Society that takes place each year on the last Friday of February, to collectively show gratitude and appreciation for resident physicians and fellows and how integral they are to the healthcare team.

Residency is a key component of graduate medical training, and offers an in-depth exposure to medical practice; often this involves long working hours matched with numerous responsibilities. Residents are an integral part of the healthcare team!

Thank you to our IUEM residents for all you do! Thank you for choosing emergency medicine, thank you for the countless hours you spend learning and growing as a physicians in training, thank you for serving the people in our communities, and thank you for choosing IUSM!

Have you heard? Andreia Alexander, MD, PhD, MPH, received the Indiana Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) Alumni Achievement Award! Her leadership continues to inspire the next generation of physician-scientists to use their voices beyond the lab and clinic.

🎉 Congratulations to Andreia Alexander, MD, PhD MPH (Class of 2014) 🎉

We’re proud to announce that Dr. Alexander has received the Indiana MSTP Alumni Achievement Award, voted on by current MSTP students in recognition of her outstanding advocacy in academic medicine.

As an alumna who continues to lead with purpose, Dr. Alexander returned to speak with our community about why and how to be an advocate in the public sphere.

Her message was clear and empowering - We all have the knowledge to be advocates—and the responsibility to amplify the reach of research.
Her work in reproductive health disparities and academic leadership continues to inspire the next generation of physician-scientists to use their voices beyond the lab and clinic.

Thank you, Dr. Alexander, for showing us what it means to lead with impact. 💥
