In this video, Brian Miles, CMPC explains how you can create a “Think Box” and a “Play Box” that helps separate planning from performing, allowing for optimal focus and trust during performance. Check out the latest article from the AASP Blog, which explores the important role parents play in shaping athletes’ mindsets in elite sports. The piece breaks down the difference between growth and fixed mindsets, how pressure and setbacks can push athletes toward self-doubt, and why fostering a belief in development through effort is critical for long-term success.

The piece also outlines practical ways parents can support a growth-oriented mindset, including reframing setbacks as learning opportunities, shifting praise from talent to effort and strategy, encouraging mastery-based goals, and using reflective questions to build resilience and confidence. Together, these approaches help athletes view challenges as opportunities for improvement rather than threats to performance.

Parents who embrace curiosity, encourage reflection, and model growth-oriented thinking create an environment where athletes feel safe to take risks and learn from failure.
