We sat down with Charmaine and asked her 3 questions to get to know her better:

FUN FACT ABOUT ME

A fun fact my colleagues might not know is that I have a knack for remembering the small, human details about patients – the stories they tell during care, the little victories they celebrate in therapy or the way their face lights up when they talk about their life. Those moments stick with me and remind me why I chose this work.

ONE THING I WISH PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT MY JOB

I wish people understood how much emotional and physical labor goes into providing excellent care in a rehab setting. We are not just helping with daily care – we are supporting people through some of the hardest, most vulnerable transitions of their lives. Every transfer, every encouragement during therapy, every conversation at the bedside is part of helping someone rebuild strength, dignity, and independence. There is a lot of work behind the scenes, and it takes teamwork, patience, and heart.

ADVICE I’D GIVE TO A NEW HIRE

For anyone stepping into this role, I’d say: ask questions, stay curious, and don’t rush the learning process. Rehab is fast paced and every patient’s needs are different. Slow down, listen, and let patients guide you – they’ll tell you what they need if you give them space. And take care of yourself too. This work is meaningful, but it’s demanding, lean on your team, communicate openly, and celebrate small wins, because those are the moments that make this job so rewarding.
