Sleeping mat/blanket project update!

Yesterday, Angie demonstrated and assisted with the creation of “plarn” (plastic yarn) out of the (500) plastic grocery bags we each cut last week! Last week’s homework was to take the strips from those cut bags (now approx. 2,000 strips/plastic loops) and link them all together via slipknots.

The mats need to be approx. 2-1/2’ wide and 6’ long. We will all work on these at home moving forward, with the goal of a mid-February completion date, and distribution to soon follow.

If anyone is interested in creating one on their own, a technique video is posted below. You just need bags, time, and the desire to help those in need! As a reminder - each mat will take about 7-8 hours to create.

The Objective Group of Companies is starting 2025 off with a focus on the homeless community by making waterproof sleeping mats/blankets.

These mats/blankets are each constructed from 500 grocery bags (a great way to recycle) and take approximately 7-8 hours to complete.

This effort is spear-headed by our Social Committe with Angie Cummins as the Chair of this initiative. We had many employees volunteer to weave a mat at home. It took an hour and a half to straighten and cut 6,000 bags!

This week, Angie will instruct us on making the plarn, and the technique to weave the mats (with YouTube videos providing additional instruction). The finished mats will be distributed mid-February, along with bags containing nonperishable food items.

Stay tuned for photo documentation of the creation of the plarn (plastic yarn) and the progress of the mats!
