If you or a loved one were admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU), we provide a highly
specialized center to help you with your recovery after leaving the hospital.
We offer this center because patients can experience problems with memory, mood,
strength, sleep, and/or quality of life after suffering a major medical or surgical illness.
About ICU Survivor Center
Patients recovering after a stay in the ICU may notice symptoms of post-intensive care
syndrome (PICS). This includes a variety of symptoms including feeling weak or tired, having
changes in mood, feeling anxious or depressed, noticing problems with memory or attention,
difficulty sleeping, hair loss, and experiencing low quality of life. Families or caregivers of ICU
survivors may also experience stress while taking care of their loved ones.
Our center is designed to help reduce these symptoms and provide an extra layer of support for
patients and their families. Our team at IU Health Methodist Hospital will meet with you and
develop an individual plan for your needs.

The center includes experts from:
• Clinical Psychology
• Critical Care Nursing
• Cognitive behavioral therapy
• Pharmacy
• Physical, occupational and speech therapy
• Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
• Pulmonary/Critical care
• Mindfulness
• Social work
• Spiritual support

Who is eligible?
Our service is available to any patient after an ICU stay. We welcome patients admitted at an IU
Health hospital or from other hospitals. We highly encourage our service for patients with the
following conditions:

• Shock
• Sepsis
• Respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation/life support for 48 hours or more
• Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)
• Trauma or emergency surgery
• ICU delirium (confusion in the ICU) for at least 48 hours
• Admitted to the ICU with COVID-19
• Physician or care team identifying severe symptoms in a critical illness survivor

Our Services
We offer a full set of services. This includes therapy, mental health treatment and memory
rehabilitation. You'll receive:

from many fields combine their expertise to care for you. This guides our whole-person
care approach for every patient. We learn about your health goals and create a plan to get
you there.
• In-clinic assessments of physical function, memory and thinking, quality of life, and
mood. We also pay special attention to your symptoms such as difficulty sleeping, dry
skin, and hair loss. These are common after staying in the ICU.
• Health coaching, interventions for improving your recovery, and coordination of your
care.

What to Expect at ICU Survivor Center
When you visit us for the first time, we’ll provide an initial evaluation. That may include:
• Meeting our team of nurses, physicians and therapists.
• We will learn about your health goals and work with you to achieve them.
• Assessments to measure your strength, balance, mood, cognition and quality of life.

Dr. Khan explaining PICS.

Dr. Sikandar Khan is a pulmonary critical care physician. He is part of a team that has launched a new clinic at IU Health designed to help patients recently released from the intensive care unit due to COVID-19 or otherwise. In addition to receiving cognitive therapy services, patients will visit with ICU nurses, pharmacists, chaplains and others. The goal is to address any physical, emotional or cognitive issues that can arise after an ICU stay.
