Indiana Public Health Association

Indiana Public Health Association APHA Council of Affiliates Outstanding Affiliate, 2022. Advocating for Indiana's public health. Let us know at info@inpha.org.

The Indiana Public Health Association was formed in 1946 to unify efforts for advancing public health in the state of Indiana. Starting with only 26 members, the Association grew to over 600 members within two years. An annual meeting was established, committees were formed and IPHA became an affiliate of the American Public Health Association. In 1997, through a grant from the Indiana State Department of Health, IPHA hired its first full-time staff person. Today, IPHA continues on the foundation created over seventy years ago by bringing together health care providers, environmental health professionals, registrars and educators in partnership with Indiana communities to be a voice for the health of the public. Posting Guidelines:
-Be kind and courteous when commenting.
-No hate speech, bullying, or political promotion will be allowed on the page. We are working toward health equity for Indiana, and it takes all of us working together to reach our goal!

🚬The Great American Smokeout®
Quitting smoking isn’t easy. It takes time. And a plan. You don’t have to stop smoking in one day. Start with day one. Let the Great American Smokeout event on the third Thursday in November be your day to start your journey toward a smoke-free life!
You’ll be joining thousands of people who smoke across the country in taking an important step toward a healthier life and reducing your cancer risk. Plus, the American Cancer Society can help you access the resources and support you need to quit.
Quitting starts here.
Why is this event important?
Although cigarette smoking rates have been declining for decades, cigarette smoking remains the most preventable cause of serious illness and death.
▶️Smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke cause more than 480,000 deaths in the US every year.
▶️Smoking ci******es increases the risk of at least 12 different cancers.
▶️In the US, cigarette smoking causes about 3 of every 10 cancer deaths. This number is higher in parts of the South and Appalachia.
▶️Some groups of people smoke more heavily or at higher rates. These populations tend to be those who face barriers to care and inequities in multiple areas of their lives, including:
➡️➡️People at lower socioeconomic and education levels
➡️➡️American Indians/Alaska natives
➡️➡️African American/Black communities
➡️➡️LGBTQ+ communities
➡️➡️People serving in the military
➡️➡️People with mental health conditions

We had an incredible time at the American Public Health Association's Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.! 🇺🇸 A heartfelt thank-you to everyone who joined us for the Indiana Reception, co-hosted with our partners at the Indiana University School of Public Health–Bloomington, the IU Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health, and the Purdue University Department of Public Health. While we were sorry to cut the evening short due to a water issue at the venue, we were so grateful for the strong turnout and sense of community among Indiana’s public health professionals. 💙

We were also proud to see Iliana Enriquez represent IPHA through the presentation, “Answering the Call: How IPHA is Mobilizing Advocates for Public Health.” She shared our legislative strategy from the 2025 session, highlighting how we convened statewide partners weekly, developed new advocacy tools, and strengthened digital engagement to protect and advance public health across Indiana. As comes to a close, we’re leaving inspired, energized, and ready to keep building a healthier Indiana.
