💡 An estimated 1,112,643 people are diagnosed in the United States with Parkinson's disease, with 90,000 diagnosed every year. PD is a progressive movement disorder of the nervous system. It causes nerve cells (neurons) in parts of the brain to weaken, become damaged and die, leading to symptoms that include problems with movement, tremor, stiffness, and impaired balance.

🗣️ SPEAK OUT is a specialized speech therapy program we use at Westside Village to acknowledge the obstacles associated with the disease. This program consists of 12 individual sessions that focus on intentional speech through structured voice and cognitive-linguistic exercises to help improve not only their speech but also their confidence, cognition, and swallowing function.

Meet the Staff! 👋
👩‍⚕️ Heather, our Director of Nursing, has over 2 decades of experience in healthcare and has dedicated the last 7 years to nursing leadership, specifically in geriatric nursing. She is deeply passionate about the nursing profession, consistently encouraging advanced education and professionalism within her team.

A strong patient advocate, Heather strives to enhance care settings to promote excellent patient care and outcomes, all while fostering a healthy and enjoyable work environment. Her choice to specialize in geriatrics stems from the profound reward she finds in caring for and supporting the elderly, who are among society's most vulnerable. 💚 Geriatric nursing offers unique opportunities to build meaningful relationships with patients, as the extended time spent with them allows for a deeper understanding of their lives. She loves the saying: "To care for those who once cared for us is one of the highest honors."

Outside of her professional life, she cherishes time with her family, enjoys reading, participates in church gatherings, and loves to explore new places.

We would like to give a huge thanks to Home Instead for these newly installed stimulation stations located on our Lavender Lane Memory Care Unit. 💜 We are greatly appreciative of the thoughtfulness, time, and dedication you took out for our residents!
