Crispus Attucks High School

Crispus Attucks High School Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School is a part of the Indianapolis Public School system and located on the near west side of Indianapolis.

The Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School is designed for students who are pursuing a career as a medical professional. Students will experience an academic program that focuses on the development of leadership abilities and a mature attitude towards achieving academic goals. The rigorous program is intended to prepare students for academic success in and beyond college. The Medical Magnet Program features a “classical” and accelerated curriculum. High school classes begin in the middle grades leading to advanced placement, honors, and college coursework opportunities. Students also have the benefit of a comprehensive support system that features a Student Learning Center. Community partnerships allow students to participate in a variety of experiential activities, including internships.

The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame recently announced its 64th Men’s Induction Class, and the late Richard “Boo” Ellis—a 1962 Crispus Attucks High School graduate, standout athlete, and longtime IPS employee—will take his rightful place among Indiana’s basketball greats.

This year’s class features 18 inductees across eras and roles, including players, coaches, and contributors who helped shape Indiana’s basketball story. For IPS, Ellis’ selection is both a celebration and a reflection of the powerful legacy Crispus Attucks has built on and off the court.

A 1981 graduate of Thomas Carr Howe High School, Carla McNelly Valladares earned degrees in computer science, Spanish and Italian, International Studies, and Critical and Socio-Cultural studies. She now teaches English as a New Language (ENL) to intermediate multilingual learners, as well as Spanish to heritage speakers—students who speak Spanish at home—at Crispus Attucks High School.

Oscar Robertson, the Indianapolis native who led Crispus Attucks High School to the boys’ state basketball title in 1955 and 1956 and enjoyed record-setting careers in college and the NBA, will be honored at the 2025 ESPYS next Wednesday.


Robertson, 86, will receive the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage for his pivotal role in establishing free agency in the NBA. The annual award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions beyond the field of play. Previous Arthur Ashe Award for Courage recipients include Bill Russell and Maya Moore.

Oscar Robertson, the legendary NBA player, will be honored with the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage in 2025 for his role in establishing free agency in the NBA.
