Breathing Space Yoga + Meditation

Breathing Space Yoga + Meditation Come as you are. Pay what you can. At Breathing Space, we understand how intimidating yoga can be. But here, we don't criticize; rather, we support.

It's terrifying to walk into a room full of people who are bending in ways you've never seen before. We remember what it was like to attend our first class. We don't care if you can touch your toes. We don't care what clothing brand you wear. We practice non-judgment both on and off the mat. We believe that the only person you should be better than is the person you were yesterday. We believe in promoting an honestly yogic lifestyle. That means that we are able and willing to hold space for you to work through whatever it is that brings you to your mat. Perhaps it's something physical, you want to lose weight or gain flexibility; perhaps it's more mental, you want to release a negative thought pattern or develop your confidence; perhaps you need something spiritual, you're looking to create a daily at-home meditation or find a Guru. Our team of qualified teachers are ready to provide whatever it is you're seeking. It all begins with the breath.

Hey you guys, it’s been awhile, huh? 😁

Quick catch up before I share the real reason I’m here: after closing the studio, I went into healthcare, taking a job at IU Health. Then I got covid (delta variant) and, as a vegan yogi, I never in my wildest dreams would have imagined it would be as bad as it was. Ultimately, I can no longer do very strenuous stuff, so my strong practice is gone (which was a BIG practice of aparigraha, non-attachment!). I then basically had to quit my job because I couldn’t physically do it, but that opened up the opportunity for me to find something better: a similar role, but remote! I now live in NYC, which I identify as “my soul’s home.” My bunnies have both crossed the rainbow bridge and now I’m mama to the sweetest rescue pup, . Life is really, really good!
💞
Okay, now to tell you something that is making my heart burst over and over!
💞
The community that was born at Breathing Space nearly 10 years ago has continued to evolve!

You may remember the cheery light that is Sarah Handy. She was a constant in our studio for awhile, nurturing it with her love as she helped care for it after classes. (Side note: y’all know I’m a freak about clean floors; I’ve never seen someone mop with so much love as Sarah!!!)

By the time our second Yoga Teacher Training program was getting scheduled, she was ready. She wasn’t sure how she’d afford it, but she was so excited…sooo excited that she spoke of it to some of her regulars at her restaurant gig, and a lovely couple asked to sponsor her! They could see the joy and love she has for the practice so clearly and felt called to support her! 🥹
At the same time, one of our long-time supporters (and favorite dentist 😉) donated a brand new Manduka Yoga mat “to a student in need.” Right away I knew it was meant for Sarah.

Now, you can go practice with Sarah, teaching from that same mat in her own space, .0, at 65th & Binford!

She’s already doing a fantastic job of recruiting familiar faces, so check out the website, check out her Instagram, then check out a class!

You better believe I will be by next time I’m in town 🤗🫶🏼

It's not lost on me the challenge of breathing lately. The Amazon, the lungs of the Earth, were engulfed in flames. There is a respiratory pandemic flowing rampantly around the globe. A black man's life was literally crushed out of him as a white officer knelt on his neck, blocking airflow.

Breath is life. And we, as humanity, as Americans, and especially POC, are struggling to breathe. After some 80-days in nearly total quarantine, I broke that on Saturday and peacefully protested for George Floyd. For Dreasjon Reed. For Breonna Taylor. For Ahmaud Arbery. For Trayvon Martin. For Mike Brown. For Aaron Bailey. For Freddie Gray. For all the black people whose precious lives have been taken unnecessarily.

There are so many concerns about the state of our society right now. But on top of a crumbling economy and global pandemic, now black people are suffering, grieving the loss of another senseless death.

White people: It is not their job to fix this. It is ours. We are the ones who created the racial divide. Now we must step up and repair it. Educate yourself. Go to the frontlines. Start conversations. Speak up when someone says something rooted in white supremacy. Write. Share. Sign petitions. Vote. Vote. Vote.

This is Yoga, too. Karma means action. The worst kind of karma is seeing something you know isn't right and not doing anything about it. Allowing wrong things, unjust things, exist and continue to be. The most popular Vedic text, the Bhagavad Gita, is discourse on why Arjuna should go to war when all he wants is to remain peaceful. Now is your time to live your Yoga.

Today's 12:00 class will be a free meditation for justice and peace. Donations (through Venmo or CashApp) welcome but not expected. Proceeds will go to BLM causes. All other classes this week will be $10.

I will share more in a separate post later, but note that I've terminated all recurring memberships for now. Members will need to pay drop-in pricing.

I love you. Do something kind today.

After the fiasco of missing out on our last trainee’s final practicum due to the Zoom server crashing, and ending our Yoga Teacher Training, albeit virtually, I am spent. This has been an interesting two months and I’m seeing that a day off here and there just isn’t enough when we’re experiencing the trauma of a global pandemic. We are going to pause classes for the week and I, for one, and going to take a moment to process all that has been happening in the world. There is so much uncertainty for the future, both short- and long-term, and stepping out of the scenery to become the seer, the observer, is the only way to gain true perspective.

We’ll be back next week. 🧘🏽 In the meantime, you can still join us for Yoga On Demand, to which I’m happy to give current members a week of free access if you email us by the end of the day tomorrow, Monday, May 18th.

Thank you for understanding!

Hey friends, Zoom is currently down, so our Chair Yoga class that was supposed to happen this morning will have to be rescheduled. We’re really sorry about this. It appears the entire world has been using Zoom lately and maybe that’s catching up with them. Please standby, as I can’t reschedule the class until zoom is back up and running.

In the meantime, you can access a previous Chair Yoga practice, along with dozens of other classes, on our Yoga On Demand page. Visit our website for more info: www.breathingspace.yoga (click “Practice Yoga” for the On Demand option)

Again, I’m really sorry about this. It’s completely beyond our control. Perhaps the universe wants us all to rest today. 💜🙏🏽✨

Breathe. Rest. Trust. All is well and everything is in divine working order.

PS: this image is from a previous Chair Yoga class, in case you’re wondering ;)

Aside from our familiar class styles that some of our Yoga Teacher Trainees will be leading this weekend, Loretta asked if she could lead a Yoga for Grief and Loss.

Y’all. My heart skipped when she asked. There couldn’t be a better offering. Loretta’s ability to hold calm, grounding, loving space is unparalleled.

And in this confusing and challenging time in humanity, we will ALL benefit from this class. We are, whether we know it or not, grieving. Collectively. Individually. For life as it was. For lost loved ones. For our identities that are changing.

Let Loretta hold space for you tonight.

6:30-7:45pm. Pre-registration is required. Sign up at www.breathingspace.yoga/schedule

Please join our radiant Yoga Teacher Trainees for classes this weekend!

These inspiring women have persevered through this intense, life-changing program even during a global pandemic, which has challenged them to see just how powerful yoga is...and how resilient they are.

In a weird and twisted way, I think this abrupt and unexpected change in our training brought to surface in them the very best aspects of their own teaching styles.

Like a diamond forced under pressure.

Join their luminous classes this weekend and see what I mean:

Join me today at 4:00 to learn how to develop a meditation practice! The discipline of this being part of your daily routine is, honestly, challenging, but that's what this workshop is for! We'll debunk myths around what meditation "should" be and learn tips to make it effective!

**Please note: next Friday, we'll pause Yin and offer a special Yoga for Grief and Loss class. This is a very popular workshop at Breathing Space, and this one is going to be led by one of our incredible Yoga Teacher Trainees! There is no extra charge for the class, so your package/membership will apply, or drop-in/pay-what-you-can. If you need space held for you, please sign up. It is going to be touching beyond words.

Along with all the other challenges of going through yoga teacher training, this year’s group has had to learn the beautiful challenge of flexibility and quick adaptation. Half of our training was moved online and we did what we could.

In it, they found their voices, their passions, and their styles.

I can’t even begin to tell you how proud I am.

Nearly all have already taught at least once online, and with rave reviews. The details are still being worked out, but please plan to join us next Friday through Sunday as they offer their final teaching practica.

A sneak peek of a couple classes are already posted on the schedule and the rest will be up soon. 🤗
