If you used drugs during your pregnancy, the fear of what happens at the hospital is real. You deserve honest answers.
Hospitals routinely conduct drug testing after delivery. It is standard hospital procedure, and it is something the medical team is trained to act on. If a test comes back positive, the social worker on staff is typically required to contact child protective services.
That can feel terrifying. But it does not mean you are out of options.
As a birth mother, you still have rights. You still have a voice. There are real options available to you, whether that means working with a family member, exploring temporary foster care, or creating an adoption plan. What matters most is that this decision belongs to you.
Every woman in this situation deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. At KidsFirst, we will walk alongside you through every option, answer every question, and support you completely. No pressure, no judgment, and no one telling you what to do.
You are a mother who loves her child. That is exactly why you are here, looking for answers. And we are so glad you found us.
We are here whenever you are ready.

The moments after delivery can be some of the most overwhelming of your life. Here is what to expect.

After giving birth, every mother faces one of the most emotional decisions of her life. Are you ready to parent your child? Are there family members who are in a position to provide the life you want for your baby? Or are you considering an adoption plan? There is no wrong answer, and there is no rush.

A social worker from the hospital will typically come in to talk with you. They will ask questions and help you think through what matters most to you and what is in the best interest of your child. That conversation is there to support you, not to pressure you.

What is most important is that this decision is yours. It should not be shaped by family, friends, or anyone else in your life. You know your situation. You know your child. And you have the right to make this decision for yourself.

Whatever you are feeling right now, know that support is available. There are people who will answer your questions, walk you through every option, and stand beside you without judgment. You do not have to figure this out alone.

Take it one step at a time. We are here for every single one of them.

You already know what’s right for you and your baby. 💜

Yesterday, one of the young women we’re walking alongside opened up about her relationship with her baby’s father — wondering if she could trust him, if the red flags she’s seeing are as real as they feel, if he’ll be the kind of dad her child deserves.

Here’s what we want every young woman in that place to hear:

You don’t have to settle. You don’t have to silence the part of you that already knows. You and your baby deserve so much more than “maybe.”

If you’re carrying questions like these about your relationship, your future, or your options, you’re not alone. We’re here whenever you’re ready. No pressure or judgment, just support.

Over 20 years ago, these kids all came from the same orphanage in Russia, where we helped them find their forever families. Getting to share a meal with them and hear about their lives now brought us more joy than we can even describe. đź’—

If you or someone you love is pregnant, we want you to hear this story. đź’•

Earlier this week, we got an early morning call. A young woman, still just a teenager, had quietly welcomed a baby into the world. The family realized they could not provide what the baby needed right now, and gave us a call.

Within the hour, a loving family was on the way that was ready, hopeful, and so grateful. Two families, forever connected by love. 🤍

We share this because we know moments like this can feel scary and overwhelming. But we promise, you are never as alone as it feels.

When you reach out to KidsFirst, you don’t need a plan. We’ll walk you through every step of the process without judgement.

We’re here 24/7 — day, night, anytime. Text or call, whatever feels easiest.

There’s no wrong answer, just the right fit for your family. 💙

Here’s a quick breakdown:
🇺🇸 Domestic adoption: A child born in the U.S. is placed with your family. Birth mothers choose the adoptive family, and the process can be open, semi-open, or closed.
🌍 International adoption: A child from another country is adopted through a process overseen by both the U.S. and the child’s home country. It typically involves additional legal steps and travel.

A few things that might shape your decision:
→ Timeline
→ Openness preferences
→ Age of the child

KidsFirst has been helping families navigate both paths since 1998. We’re Hague accredited, meaning we meet the highest international standards for ethical adoption practice.

Have questions? We’re always happy to talk through your options — no pressure, just honest answers. Call us at 317-843-2300.
